could always count on good food and a clean bed. In fact, when President John
Taylor died, Wiford Woodruff writes in his journal of a stop at their home the
next night as he was journeying home to be ordained the next prophet.

The Bartholomew & Metcalf families are very intertwined. Joseph & Polly
Bartholomew had two children who married children of John E. & Mary Waslin
Metcalf. And, as if that wasn’t enough, several of the Bartholomew
grandchildren and great grandchildren married Metcalf grandchildren and great
grandchildren.

neat picture on the Ferry at Mineral, Idaho John Christian is the man by the horse. The others in
the foreground are his wife Mary Bowen Vail and her younger siblings. The man
at the wheel is Mary's father Thomas Vail, who ran the Ferry at Brownlee and
Mineral.

- This is the photograph which most descendants of John Edward Metcalf, Jr.
have. I have always considered it a companion to photograph 1 of Mary Waslin
below. The matching backgrounds make one think they were taken in the same
sitting. When I first saw photograph 2, I didn't think they could possibly be
the same man, but the more I look at them, the more I think they might be.
Notice the baggy eyelids in both, and the horizontal crease between the eyes.
The hairlines are similar, though photograph 2 seems to be receded somewhat. At
first I thought that photograph 2 was that of an younger man than photograph 1,
but I think that's because his hair is longer. The clothing of photograph 2 is
certainly that of a later period than the clothing of photograph 1.
photograph 2 - This photograph has been given to me by various descendants as either 1) Thomas Metcalf, the father of John Edward Metcalf, Sr. 2) John Edward Metcalf, Sr. or 3) William Bown, the husband of Jane Ann Metcalf. In truth, it can't be Thomas Metcalf as he died before Daguerre published his daguerreotype photographic process (and this photo is obviously later than a daguerreotype). I sure would like to hear from descendants of William Bown to see what photos they have of both men.

- This photograph, along with Mary Waslin's photograph 2 below, are the
photographs which descendants of Eliza Roxie have. Mary Waslin's photograph 2
is clearly the same woman as the photograph which I have of her, and this
photograph 3 of her husband is clearly the same man as in photograph 2. I've
decided they are all the same man. Do you agree?
