12 Jan 1847     Born at Shoreditch, Middlesex, England

Jan 1853          Immigrated to Utah with his parents’ family aboard the ship “Ellen Maria”

Sept 1853        Arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah in Claudius Spencer’s wagon train. (age 6)

1861                The Metcalf Family moved to Warm Creek, Sanpete, Utah. The settlement was later renamed Fayette.

1868                Married Caroline Marie Larson

12 Oct 1869    Son James Jr. is born in Gunnison

1870                The 1870 census has his family living in Fayette

2 Nov 1871     Son William L. is born

28 Sep 1873    Son Frederick L. is born in Fayette

6 Dec 1874      Son William L. dies, buried in Fayette.

30 Mar 1876    Daughter Hannah is born in Gunnison

6 Apr 1878      Daughter Mabel is born in Gunnison

1880                The 1880 census has his family living in Gunnison, Sanpete, Utah.

8 Apr 1880      Daughter Mariana or Laura is born

6 Dec 1883      Son Lester is born

9 Aug 1884      Daughter Evelyn is born in Gunnison

9 Feb 1888      Son Vernon is born in Gunnison

24 Jan 1890     Daughter Mariana or Laura dies of diphtheria, buried in Fayette.

29 Jan 1890     Daughter Mabel dies of diphtheria, buried in Fayette.

6 Feb 1890      Son Lester dies of diphtheria in Gunnison, buried in Fayette.

5 Sep 1892      Son James Jr. marries Eliza Knighton

1893                By this date James is a principal with the Central Utah Wool Co. and his family is living in Salt Lake City.

Aug 1894         The Manti Messenger reports that James is now employed by the Union Stock Yards company of South Omaha, Neb.

Dec 1894          Advertises to lease or rent his farm in Gunnison.

14 Sep 1897    Daughter Hannah marries John Wesley Christian at Salt Lake City

Aug 1898         Advertises to sell his farm in Gunnison

7 Apr 1899      Son Frederick L. marries Aldreda Kimball at Salt Lake City

3 April 1902     Daughter Evelyn marries Stanley Lister at Salt Lake City (they later divorce)

8 July 1910      Son Vernon marries Daisy Maude Mumford at Salt Lake City

2 Mar 1912      Daughter Evelyn marries Robert Flickinger at Salt Lake City

4 Dec 1917      His wife Caroline dies of Bright’s disease in Salt Lake City

1920                The 1920 census has him alone in what appears to be a hotel or boarding house in San Diego, California. Why was he in San Diego?
                        Sons James & Fred were living in Utah, Vernon was in Nevada, Hannah was in Washington state, and Evelyn was in Arizona.

25 Sep 1922    Dies in San Diego, California, age 75.

 

Obituary

Deseret News 29 Sep 1922; 2nd Section; pg 1; FHL film 027098:

Former Resident of Utah To Be Buried in Salt Lake.

The death of James Metcalf, Sr., 76 [he was actually 75], who for 3[smudged] was a resident of Salt . . . [illegible] . . . iego, Calif., on Monday. Mr. Metcalf was a native of London and came to the United States with his parents as a boy.  Before coming to Salt Lake he had lived in Gunnison for a period.  For the past three years he has made his home in San Diego.  Mr. Metcalf is survived by three sons and two daughters: James Metcalf, Jr. of Salt Lake; F. L. Metcalf of Bingham; Vernon Metcalf, of Reno, Nev.; Mrs. Hannah Christian and Mrs. Evelyn Flickinger, both of Los Angeles.  The body will be brought to Salt Lake and funeral services will be held Saturday at 8 o'clock at the S. M. Taylor & Co. mortuary chapel.  Interment will be in Wasatch Lawn cemetery.
