Mission to the Southern States

  

April 1881

Left Salt Lake City at 7. A.M. April 12. Arrived at Ogdon at 10 after 6, left Ogdon at 10 & 40 minutes A.M. Arrived at Green River 8 & 20 P.M.

13th - Arrived at Cheyenne 2 & 40 P.M. Half way from Ogdon to Omaha 516 1/3 miles all well.

14th - Arrived at Grand Island 7 & 50 A.M. Arrived at Freemont 1 & 30 P.M. The Platte River had over flowed and washed the track away which caused to proceed very slow - Arrived in Omaha at 3 & 20 P.M. Tired out. Crossed the river to 6 Bluffes started for St. Louis at 5 P.M.

15th - Arrived at St. Louis at 8 A.M. 410 miles. Went to St. James Hotel stayed in the city all day sight seeing. Was on the great Bridge across the Mississippi. Left St. Louis with other Elders at 8 & 20 P.M. for Nashville.

16th - Arrived at Columbus, Kentucky at 7 & 30 A.M. Crossed the Mississippi on the steamboat arriving at Nashville at 7 & 30 P.M. 377 miles. Met Pres. John Morgan at the depot. Stopped at a private hotel.

17th - Sunday after breakfast went with the Brethren to see the State House which is a very fine building, after which we went to the Catholic Church and stayed awhile, and then went to a Presbyterian Church after dinner. Pres. J. Morgan took us to see the Vanderbilt University and grounds which are very extensive and grand.

18th - Rained very near all day. Met Elder J.R. Murdock, Pres of the Tenn. Conference, who had come to see Pres. Morgan. We had a splendid time, after bidding adieu to the Elders J. & Elder Jedidiah Goff, left on the 8 & 20 P.M. train for Chattanooga, arriving at 4 A.M. April 19th, 151 miles.

19th - Leaving Chattanooga 8 & 30 A.M. Arrived at Cleavland, Tenn. at 10 & 30 A.M. 29 miles stayed all day hired a team to take us to Fannin Co. Georgia. 65 miles

20 - Started from Cleveland at 7 A.M. went 40 miles up Toccoa River stopped at Dreck Town all night. Very rough country.

21st - Started 7 A.M. after going a few miles met with an accident. Going up a hill the driver hit the horses they sprung forward throwing I & Elder Goff out backward a distance of 10 feet amongest the rocks, the spring seat falling on top of us, but thanks be to a kind providence we were not hurt much. After mounting our vehicle we arrived at Van Gants Store at 2 P.M. We met with Elder Adams of Fountain Green, was glad to take a Mormon Elder by the hand in a strange land. Stopped at a Mr. Ben Tilley's all night, had a good nights rest.

22 - We went to a Mr. C. Ransey's had dinner, in the evening went with Elder Adams to a Baptist meeting but did not receive any light on the gospel stayed all night at Mr. Ransey's, having walked about 4 miles. This is a very mountainous country heavly timbered.

23 - After breakfast went up the Toccoa River 13 miles to Bro. Perry Cantrills on Coopers Creek where there is a few Saints and was glad to meet with some of God's people. Stayed all night at Bro. Cantrills.

24 - Sunday, according to appointment which had been given by Elder Adams we held meeting at 11 A.M. had an attentive audience at which I spoke the Spirit of God being with me, we had a good time. After meeting we Baptised Mr. Johnson Brown and confirmed him, Elder Adams officiating. Went to Bro. Washington Payne's stayed all night had a sociable chat.

25 - Went to Bro. Johnson Brown's. Wrote 2 letters home, talked to Mrs. Brown on the princepals of the gosple stayed all night.

26 - Went to Bro. Cantrill's and then to Mr. Pickleaimers. Came up the heaviest rain I ever saw, stayed all night. Walked 4 miles

27 - Went 3 miles to the post office did not get a letter, went to see a sick man. Stayed at Bro. P Cantrill's all night

28 - Started for Union Co. arriving at a Mr. Tanner's having walked about 15 miles. Stayed all night talked on the principals of the gosple.

29 - Tried to get a meeting but the people was so busy they would not come out. Went on stopped at a Mr. Hearkers in Koassa. Talked awhile, went on 10 miles. Bought a piece of corn bread Blessed and eat it, traveled on about 15 miles further and stayed all night with a Mr. B. Tilley & Family.

30 - After dinner went to a Mr. Bradley's & then to Mr. Ramey got shaved went to Mr. Fate Garland's on Wilseat creek 3 miles st stopped all night

 

May

1st - Sunday. Held meeting at 3 P.M. Had a very good attentive audience. Spoke on the 1st principales of the Gosple, the Spirit of God was with us, we had a good meeting. Stayed all night at D. Garlands

2nd - Went to Lafayette Garlands rained hard stayed all day & night

3rd - Went squirrel hunting no luck, came back & started for Coopers Creek. Arrived at Bro. P. Cantrill's 4 P.M. having walked 17 miles. Elder Adams got his release from Pres. Morgan. I and Elder Goff had to part company I to go to White Co. and labor with Elder Keeler, & Elder Carter to come and labor with Elder Goff. Stayed all night with Mr. Cantrill

4th - Visited the Saints had dinner at Bro. Brown's. Went to see a sick man. Wrote a letter home. Stayed all night at Bro. Payne's , walking 4 miles.

5th - Fast-Day held meeting with the Saints. Organized a Branch. Ordained Bro. Johnson Brown to the office of a Teacher. Baptised Rolen Cantrill, Elder Adams officiating had a good time. After dinner started for White Co. arrived at Mr. Lewis Eppling's having walked 6 miles stayed all night had a good time talking.

6th - Started at 6 A.M. went 12 miles bought some corn bread eat it went on got on the wrong road went back arrived at Mr. Shadrach Canada's, tired out having walked 30 miles it was a very warm day stayed all night. Went to bed without supper talked on the principals of the gosple.

7th - Started at 6 & 30 A.M. after doing some more talking & giving Mr. Canada some pamphlets to read and eating a hearty breakfast, went about 5 miles a team overtook us, the man told us to put our valises in the wagon which was quite a relief, we rode about 2 miles arrived at Bro. P. Hempshires at 5 P.M. tired and foot sore having walked 20 miles, the weather being very warm.

8th - Sunday, went to Bro. King the Presiding Elder of the Chattahoochee Branch here, we met Elder Keeler & J Carter was glad to meet them. Went to sunday school taught a class after school held meeting had a good time with the saints after eating dinner with a Mr. Hardey went 2 miles to a Methodest meeting house which the Elders had engaged and held meeting at 3 P.M. had a good congregation went and stayed all night at Mr. J Hardey

9th - Visited some of the Saints. Stayed all night at Bro. P. Humphries had a good sociable time.

10th - Visited among the Saints getting acquainted stayed all night with a Mr. Perry Smith a friend who had a ferry and crossed us over the river whenever we wanted to cross free of charge

11th - Went to Mr. Hardies wrote 2 letters stayed all night

12th - Went to the P.O. but did not get any letter had dinner with Mr. Monroe Canup stayed all night with Mr. Smith had a good talk on the Gosple.

13th - Went to Bro King had dinner after dinner went to Bro. P. Humphries. Elder Adam Carter & Goff started for Fannin Co. Elder Keeler going with them part way to fill an appointment I went with them a short distance bid adieu and returned to Bro. Humphries felt a little lonesome stayed all night with Bro. I.M. Collins

14 - Went to Bro. Kings and we went and put the floor in a log house a friend had let us have to hold Sabbeth Schools and Meetings in. some of our enemys having tore it up and carried it out. Stayed all night with Bro. King having a sociable chat.

15 - Sunday attended Sabbeth School taught a class talked to the children and parents on the duties of children to parents & the duties of parents to their children. Had dinner at Bro. Kings had a good time talking and singing. Went to Mr. Hardy's stopped all night.

16 - Stayed at Mr. Hardy's till after dinner reading. Went to Bro Humphries stayed all night.

17 - After breakfast went to Bro. King's met Elder J.B. Keeler stayed all night.

18 - Went to Mr. J Hardy's wrote 2 letters home 1 to Grandpa Bartholomew & 1 Home walked 3 miles stayed all night

19 - Went to P.O. received my first letter from home. Went to Bro. Kings to get some books stayed all night at Mr. Holcomb's having walked 6 miles.

20 - Started for Silver Shoals to Banks Co. to fill an appointment arrived and stayed all night at Mr. Parkers having walked 15 miles very warm.

21 - Went to Mr. Chambers had dinner. After dinner rained a good shower. Went to Frenn stayed all night talked on the princepals of the gosple walked 5 miles

22 - Sunday held meeting had a good audience at which I spoke. The Spirit of God was with us. Went with Mr. Scales to dinner stayed all night at Mr. Stewart walked 5 miles.

23 - Started back to Habersham Co. arrived at Mr Hardy's at 1 P.M. rather tired walked 15 miles it was very warm.

24 - Went to Bro. Kings wrote 2 letters stayed all night at Bro. Humphries talked on the Gosple walked 4 miles.

25 - Went to P Holcomb talked on the Gosple had dinner went to Hilliard Fergarson's stayed all night very warm walked 4 miles.

26 - Went to P.O. received 2 letters from ___ & 1 from Sarah stayed all night at Mr. Canup's talked & sung walked 5 miles.

27 - Went to J Hardies had dinner talked on the gosple went to Bro. Collins stayed all night walked 4 miles

28 - Started for Nacoochee Valley arrived and stayed all night at Mr. Cantrill's having walked 15 miles very warm weather.

29 - Sunday could not get a chance to hold meeting stayed all day reading and talking and singing. Rained a good season.

30 - Started for Mt. Airy rained part of the day went through Clarkville bought some crackers. Stayed at Statsville all night with a Mr. Anderson tired out having walked 23 miles in the mud and rain.

31 - Went to Mt. Airy bought a suit of clothes for $10.00 went on arrived at Bro. Kings having walked 12 miles very hot.

 

June

1 - Wrote 3 letters 1 home 1 to Sarah & 1 to Marne read the Bible hoed corn stayed all night at Bro. Kings.

2 - Fast Day attended Meeting with the Saints Had a good time it rained hard. After dinner went to P.O. received 2 letters 1 from Father 1 from Jas Mellon. Stayed all night at Mr. J Hardy. Walked 4 miles.

3 - Stayed all day at Mr. Hardy's reading and hoeing corn.

4 - Hoed corn & read went to Mr. Holcomb stayed all night

5 - Sunday went across the river to Sabbeth School taught a class. Held a meeting with the Saints at which I spoke the Spirit of the Lord being with us. Had meeting in the afternoon across the river had a good congregation. Stayed all night at Mr. Barton Stevens walked 5 miles.

6 - Went to Bro. Hardies read the Bible after dinner went to Bro. Collins Sis. Collins being sick. We administered to her stayed all night at Bro. Humphries could not sleep walked 3 miles.

7 - Went to Bro. Collins found Sis. Collins feeling better after dinner went to J Hall's talked on the Gosple stayed all night walked 3 miles.

8 - Wrote 2 letters 1 to Father & 1 to Anthony rained hard talked on Princepals of the Gosple after dinner went to Mr. P Holcomb's stayed all night walked 3 miles

9 - Went to P.O. received a letter from home stayed all night at Mr. Canufs walked 2 miles

10 - Went to J. Handies after dinner went to Mr. Wilburn Morris talked on the gosple walked 5 miles stayeed all night.

11 - Went to Mr Hardies. Hoed cotten after dinner. Shaved went to Lebron Humpheries stayed all night Walked 6 miles

12 - Sunday went to Sabbeth School taught a class held a meeting with the Saints spoke on the first princepals of the gosple had a good meeting went to Bro Kings had dinner talked and read went to Mr Smith in the evening to hear the organ played sung a few hymns stayed all night with Bro King walked 2 miles.

13 - Went to Mr P Holcomb's had dinner, Singing and talking some went to J Hardies wrote a letter to Bro E Stevensen stayed all night. Walked 2 miles very warm weather

14 - Wrote a letter home hoed cotton after dinner went to Mr Frank Andersen's stayed all night walked 4 miles talked on the gosple

15 - Went to Mr J Hall's talked on the gosple after dinner went to Bro L L King's stayed all night walked 3 miles

16 - Started for the P.O. had dinner at Mr Holcomb's received a letter from Bro Madsen good news from home stayed all night at Mr Canup's talked on the princepals of the gosple walked 3 miles

17 - Started for Silver Shoals Banks Co. to fill an appointment stayed all night at Wilburn Morris's walked 4 miles

18 - Went on in the morning arriving at Silver Shoals at 3 P.M. stayed all night with Mr. Stewart walked 15 miles very hot weather

19 - Sunday we held meeting according to appointment preached under the trees had a good attentive congregation give away some pamphlets stayed all night with Mr Stewart did not sleep any for 2 nights

20 - Started for Habersham arrived at Hardies heard that Sis Collin's had died stayed all night. Walked 20 miles very tired very hot day

21 - Went across the river into White Co. to see Bro Collins who was left with 4 children to care for without a Mother found him feeling as well as could be expected under the circumstances give him some comforting words on the resurection stayed all night with Bro Humphries walked 3 miles

22 - Went to Bro Kings wrote 2 letters 1 to William Metcalf & 1 to John Bartholomew after dinner went to Mr. Holcombs talked on the gosple stayed all night - walked 3 miles Thermometer 106 in the shade.

23 - Went to the Post Office received 2 letters 1 from home & 1 from Marvene Metcalf had dinner at Mr Camp's crossed the river and stayed all night at Bro Kings walked 4 miles

24 - Started to go to Mr Shirley's at the Blue Ridge he having invited me to go and see him arrived at Mr Cantrill's stayed all night - having walked 15 miles very dry weather & hot

25 - Went on arrived at Mr. Shirley all right talked on the first princepals of the Gosple stayed all night could not get a chance to hold meeting walked 14 miles

26 - Sunday rained a little give Mr. Shirley some pamphlets bid him and family good bye & started back arriving at Mr Cantrills had supper talked on the gosple walked 14 miles stayed all night the people not much interested in salvation of their souls

27 - Started for White Co. arriving at Bro. P. Humphries walked 15 miles rather tired, very hot stayed all night

28 - Went to Bro Kings had dinner went to Mr Perry Smith's talked on the glorious truths of the gosple stayed all night - walked 2 miles

 

July

1 - Went to Mr Holcomb's rained hard done a good deal of talking and singing stayed all night

2 - Went to Mr J Hardy's Elder Kaler half soled my shoes crossed the river to Bro Kings had dinner at 5: P.M. Baptised Mr & Mrs Hardy & Mrs Charlotte Holcomb, Elder Keeler offeciating stayed all night at Bro Hardy's walked 6 miles

3 - Sunday went to Sabbeth School taught a class held meeting with the saints Elder Keeler preached Sis Collins funeral sermon I spoke on the first principles of the gosple there was an attentive congregation went to Bro P Humphries stayed all night walked 4 miles very hot weather

4 - After dinner went to Mr J Hall's talked on the gosple stayed all night walked 2 miles

5 - Went to Bro Kings wrote a letter to BP CA Madsen waded across the Chattahooche & Sogue Rivers went to Mr Jas Colston's stayed all night sing some hyms walked 4 miles

6 - Waded across the river went to Mr Smith's had dinner talked on the gosple crossed the river stayed all night at Mr P Holcombe very warm day walked 3 miles

7 - Went to Fast meeting had a good time went to Bro Hardy's after dinner went to P.O. received a letter from home stayed all night at Mr. W Canuphs walked 3 miles

8 - Went to Mr A. Ferguson read the paper about Pres Garfield being shot Very hot thermometer 112 in the shade went to Bro Haddy's stayed all night walked 2 miles

9 - Wrote 2 letters 1 to Elder Dorford & 1 home went to Bro Kings stayed all night walked 3 miles

10 - Sunday went to Sabbeth School taught a class held meeting with the Saints went to Bro Hardy's had dinner, according to appointment held meeting at 3 P.M. in the Methodist church after meeting started for Conferance to be held in Haralson co. Ga. 165 miles from here went to Frank Anderson stayed all night walked 7 miles

11 - Started at 6 A.M. arrived at Mr Barnetts very warm day rained in the evening stayed all night walked 15 miles Lumpkin Co.

12 - Started at 6 A.M. passed through Dawsonville, Dawson Co. came up a rain walked 5 miles in it stopped at a Mr Darnell's all night having walked 22 miles talked on the principals of the gosple

13 - After Breakfast & some more talk on the gosple we bid Mr Darnell & Family good bye went on through Jasper, Pickens Co. over a very rough country and a very hot day stayed with a Mr Smith all night tired out walked 35 miles

14 - Was so tired could not sleep after breakfast started passed through Faremount, Gordon Co. bought some crackers eat them went on stayed all night at a Mr Alexandria's very tired having walked 25 miles

15 - Started 6 a.m., Crossed the Woodanalla river on a boat - very hot day had dinner at a M house, after a good rest went over St. John's mountain, held prayer on the top & thanked God for his protecting care in our journey went down the Mountain arrived at Bro Walter Smith Haywood Valley Chattouga Co. Tired out & foot sore having walked 23 miles Making 115 miles in 5 days the weather being extremely hot & dry the crops burning up.

16th - Rested all day at Bro Smith's

17th - Sunday attended Meeting with the Saints there being a branch of the Church here, had a good time stayed all night with Bro J. Barber the Pres of the Branch

18th - Visited the saints stayed all night at Bro Smith's had a good time

19th - Very warm day. not very well in health stopped all night with Bro Barber

20th - Started after dinner for Haralson Co. Bro Barber taking his team it beat shank's horses all hollow arriving at Rome 15 miles stayed all night slept in a Livery Stable

21st - Started 6 a.m. passed through Cedartown where there is iron works stopped & had dinner. very dusty roads went on got to Bro Williams. Felton Haralson Co. Then we met Pres John Morgan Walter, Scott, E.M. Cowley, JW. Taylor, Parkinson, Bills, Pacher, Bean, Houston, Carter Goff & Keeler Elder's from Utah was glad to Meet them, traveled 35 Miles

22nd - First day of Conferance convened at 10 a.m. under a bowery at Which the Elders gave reports about their districts in the Afternoon the Elders continued to give reports we had a good time

23rd - Second day of Conferance a large congregation had some very good instructions we had lunch under the Bowery, in the afternoon we had excellent instruction from Pres Morgans, the Lord was with us we rejoiced

24th - Third day of Conferance large congregation had good instructions from the Elders reporting favorable in regard to their fields of labor had lunch with the saints under the bowery, in the afternoon had some good advice & instructions from the Elders & Pres. Morgan we also held two Priesthood Meetings at which the Elders recieved valualble Councile it was truly a feast of fat things and the Elders rejoiced to be in one anothers society the spirit of God was with us. we felt to praise him

25th - Elder's Keeler, Carter Goff & Myself bid adieu to Pres Morgan & the Elder's & saints & started back to our fields of labor, Bro J. Barber taking us with his team 35 miles to Rome where Elder Keeler & myself bid good bye with Elder Goff & Carter & Bro Barber they going to Tannin Co, I & Elder Keeler going to by Rail to White Co stayed all night in Rome

26th - Started from Rome at 8, a.m. arrived at Atlanta at 1 P.M. leaving Atlanta at 3:20 P.M. arrived at longview went on 6 miles rained very hard got-wet-through stayed all night at Mr. Morris's had a good nights rest

27th - Went to Bro Hardy's found them all well was glad to get back home having traveled 350 miles since leaving, 115 miles on foot 70 by wagon & 165 by rail having been gone 16 days received 3 letters 1 from John Bartholomew 1 from Anthony Metcalf 1 letter from Father wrote 1 letter home & 1 to Geo Bartholomew stayed all night at Bro Hardy's walked 3 miles

28th - Stayed at Bro Hardy's till after dinner went to P.O received a letter from Elders Dorford Thensen & Jas Mellor on a mission in Kansas stayed all night at Mr P. Holcom's talked on the gospel and sang walked 3 miles

29th - Crossed the river went to Bro King's found them well, very hot & dry weather stayed all night walked 2 miles

30th - Went to Bro P. Humphries found them well & glad to see us after dinner went to Bro S. Humphries stayed all night walked 2 miles

31st - Sunday went to S. School taught a class held Meeting had a good time all the Saints & friends glad to see us back went across the river to Bro Hardy's had dinner talked & read went & stopped all night at Mr P. Holcumb's walked 3 miles

 

August

1st - Read & studied the Bible in the evening went to a Methodist Meeting came back more empty than I went stayed all night at Mr P. Holcomb's. walked 2 miles

2nd - Went to Bro J Hardy's wrote 2 letters 1 to Father & 1 to James Hansen, read & talked on the Principles of Gospel stayed all night very hot day had some melon

3rd - Wrote a letter to Elder E. Stevensen went to, P. Office delivered some letters Went across the river stayed all night with Mr. Smith talked on the principles of the gospel walked 4 miles

4th - Fast day met with the Saints had a good time crossed the river to Bro Hardy's after dinner went to P.O. received 2 letters 1 from home & 1 from Jas Mellor went to Mr. M Ganup's stayed all night walked 3 miles

5th - Read & wrote till after dinner crossed the river went to W. F. Anderson's his wife having the mump's we went to Mr. Jos. Hall's had supper talked on the gospel walked 5 miles

6th - Read & talked till after dinner went across the river to Mr. P. Holcomb's there being company we had a good time in singing & talking stayed all night walked 2 miles

7th - Sunday went to S. School taught a class held Meeting with the saints having a good time went to Bro L.S. King's after dinner went to Mr Smith's sung and talked went back to Bro King's stayed all night it rained a good season walked 2 miles

8th - Went to Bro P. Humphries wrote talked & read stayed all night at Bro J. M. Collins walked 2 miles

9th - Had a chat on the principles of the gospel with a widow woman she is favorable went to Bro Hardy's wrote 2 letters heard a report of a mob being raised to warn the Mormon's out but I put my trust in God and do not fear stayed all night walked 3 miles

10th - Wrote a letter went to a log chopping stayed all night at Mr. Canup's there was a frolic in the evening very hot day walked 3 miles

11th - Went to P. O. deleverd some letters received, D.N. read a sermon to Mr Canup's family went to P.O. received 3 letters all well at home very hot-day went to Spencer Holcomb's walked 3 miles

12th - Read a sermon talked on the Gospel after dinner went & cut some timber for cross ties stayed all night at Bro Hardy's

13th - Read went and cut some timber for cross ties washed & shaved stayed all night at Bro Hardy

14th - Sunday went to S. School taught a class held Meeting with the Saints after Meeting went to Bro Collins baptised his sister Rebecca Burke (Elder Keeler officiating) very warm day went to Bro Hardy's walked 5 miles

15th - Wrote a letter helped to cross cut some timber walked 3 miles talked about Utah stayed at Bro Hardy's

16th - Elder Keeler had a working some brethern & friends helping him to get railroad ties I helping to cross cut stayed all night at Bro Hardy's

17th - Wrote a letter talked on the first principles of the Gospel to a Mrs Hancock after dinner worked on cross ties, went to Mr. Canup's stayed all night walked 3 miles

18th - Went to P.O. received a letter from Wm Metcalf all well went to Bro Hardy's stayed all night walked 3 miles

19th - Went to Spencer Holcomb's read a sermon of E Snow's after dinner went across the river to Mr. P Smith read the same sermon stayed all night at Bro S. Humphrie's walked 3 miles

20th - Read the Bible talked & sung some hymns about 10 P.M. 6 Clock went to see Bro Collins cut down a tree the dogs having treed a coon the dog's killed it was the first I ever saw stayed all night at Bro Collins very hot weather

21st - Sunday. S. School & Meeting as usual very hot day the crops burning up stayed all night at Mr Perry Smith's walked 2 miles

22nd - Went to Bro P Humphries stayed all day very warm & pickly stayed all night at Bro Sebron Humphries walked 2 miles

23rd - Visited Mr. J. Hall talked on the gospel sung some hym's stayed all night walked 2 miles

24th - Went to Bro Hardy's waded the river wrote 2 letters stayed all night walked 2 miles

25th - Read the Bible rained a shower quite pleasnt- stayed all night at Bro Hardy.s

26th - Went to Mr. Andy Fergusen found Elder Keeler there received 4 letters all well at home read a sermon to the family went to Hilliar Furguson's stayed all night walked 2 miles

27th - Went to Bro Hardy's helped him to put a dam in the Branch to irrigate a turnip patch stayed all night walked 2 miles

28th - Sunday rained hard all day could not-hold Meeting went to Mr. Spencer Holcomb's talked on the Gospel with a Mr. Tomlin stayed all night very wet-time

29th - Crossed the river to Mr. P. Smith had dinner read a sermon to the family went to Br. Pinkney Humphries stayed all night walked 2 miles

1st - Started back arrived at Mr. Cantrell's walked 12 miles very warm stayed all night Camp Meetings & protracted Meetings are all the rage now, there is not much chance for Mormons to preach

2nd - Started back home arrived at Bro P Humphries walked 15 miles very warm day stayed all night at Bro Collins

3rd - Went to Bro Hardies wrote a letter received 2 letters 1 from home 1 from Bp Madsen helped Bro Hardy to tote fodder stayed all night

4th - Sunday held meeting with the Saints had a good time after Meeting went to Bro P Humphries administered to his girl, Aveline. Read a sermon went to Mr. Smith very warm day stayed all night walked 4 miles

5th - Crossed the river went to Bro Hardys wrote 2 letters very warm day read & done considerable talking stayed all night walked 3 miles

6th - Went to Mr. Spencer Holcomb's where Elder Keeler was putting a blast in a well there was so much foul air it would not go off started another I working some in it stayed all night

7th - Went across the river to Bro King after dinner went to Bro P Humpheries stayed all night walked 2 miles

8th - Went to Post Office received a letter from Father all well at home very warm day went to Bro Hardy's read the D. News walked 5 miles stayed all night

9th - Started accross the river went to Bro King's after dinner went to Bro P Humphries stayed all night at Bro Collins walked 3 miles

10th - Stayed all day and night very warm weather

11th - Sunday held S School and Meeting as normal had a good time protracted meetings all the rage not-much use for Mormonism the Enemies of God's work doing a great deal of threatening

12nd - Went to Bro King's wrote a letter went to the river with the boys to get some muscadines (note- thick skinned purple fruit having a strong musk flavor) stayed all night at Bro King's walked 2 miles

13th - Went to Mr. J. Halls talked on the gospel stayed all night very warm weather walked 2 miles

14th - Went to Mr. Andersen's rained hard talked a good deal sung some hymns wrote a letter stayed all night walked 2 miles

15th - Went to the Post Office did not receive any mail crossed the river to Mr. Canup's after dinner went to Bro Hardy's it rained very hard stayed all night walked 2 miles

16th - Raining hard wanted to start to fill an appointment up in the mountains crossed the river went to Bro S. Humphries stayed all night walked 2 miles

17th - Started to the mountains to fill an appointment commenced to rain at 12 noon arrived at Mr. C. Cantrell's rained all night walked 15 miles

18th - Sunday could not go on, the weather being to bad stayed all day talked on the gospel & sung hymns stayed all night

19th - Started back arrived at Bro P Humphries at 1 P.M. tired having wolked 15 miles stayed all night

20th - Went to Bro Kings found them all well, after dinner crossed the river to Mr. Holcomb's walked 3 miles talked on the Judgements of God in the last days stayed all night

24th - Helped Bro Hardy to finish his cane went to where they was making Syrup had a big talk with the men making Syrup on the Gospel went to Bro P Humphries stayed all night walked 3 miles

25th - Sunday held S School & Meeting as usual with the Saints had a good Meeting went to Bro Hardy's stayed all night walked 5 miles

26th - Went and had a long talk on the Gospel with the men making Syrup at Mr. Holcomb had a good time stayed with them till 11 P.M. stayed all night a Bro Hardy's

27th - Crossed the river to Mr. Smith's Elder Keeles not feeling well had Mrs. Smith give him a Lobelia Vomit I went to Bro King stayed all night rained very heavy and walked 2 miles

28th - Went to Bro Hardy's wrote 2 letters very warm day heard that the Georgia Legislature had passed a bill prohibiting the Mormons from preaching polygamy; well the Lord will not have his work stopped by the puny arm of man we do not-preach polygamy we only defend it. & I expect to do as long as I am Faithful I serve God & not Man went to Mr Canup's stayed all night walked 2 miles

29th - Went to P.O. delivered 2 letters received 1 from Home all well went to Bro Hardy's stayed all night reading the Deseret News, walked 2 miles

30th - After dinner went to Mr. Wilbur Morris stayed all night talked on the gospel walked 3 miles

1st - Went to Hilyer Furgusen's had dinner sung & talked went to Bro Hardy's shaved & washed crossed the river went to Bo Collins stayed all night walked 5 miles

2nd - Sunday held Meeting & S School had a good time crossed the river to Bro Hardy's went to a Methodist meeting but the preacher did not come went back & stayed all night at Bro Hardy's walked 4 miles

3rd - Crossed the river to Bro King's found Elder Keeler we went Mr Joe Halls found them well talked on the Gospel sung some hymns stayed all night walked 3 miles

4th - Went to Bro King's helped him to strip Sugar Cane after dinner wrote a letter stayed all night walked 2 miles very warm

5th - Helped Bro King to haul Cane to the Mill the weather is getting quite cool to day

6th - Fast day held Meeting with the saints went across the river to Bro Hardy's after dinner went to P.O. delivered some letters received some papers went bach to Bro Hardy's stayed all night walked 5 miles

7th - Went to the Shoemakers got a pair of Boots I had ordered cost $4.00 went back to Bro Hardy's having walked 12 miles stayed all night weather more pleasant

8th - After dinner went to Mr. Holcomb's stayed all night

9th - Sunday held meeting & S School with the Saints had a good time went to Bro King's went and stopped all night at Mr Smith's walked 2 miles

10th - A young man a stranger by the name of C. Craig came and required baptism told him to take a week to investigate- the doctrine which he promised to do, helped Bro King to strip cane stayed all night

11th - Went to Bro Humphries after dinner went to Mr Joe Hall's - talked on the principles of Gospel was introduced to a Mr Barnwell had a chat with him stayed all night walked 3 miles

12th - Went to Mr. Smith's helped him to get some timber to make clapboards stayed all night walked 3 miles

13th - Crossed the river to Bro Hardy's wrote a letter home went to P.O. received 2 letters all well at home learned of Apostles, Orson Pratt's death went and got the use of the Methodist School house to hold meeting on sunday walked 4 miles

14th - Crossed the river to Mr. Smith's helped him to haul fodder he letting the Saints have a log house to hold S School & Meeting's in I helped him to move his fodder out of the house walked 2 miles stayed all night Elders Goff & Carter come from Fannin Co was very glad to meet them

16th - Sunday held S School after which I Baptised Mr Cyrus Payne Craig went to Bro Hardy's to dinner held Meeting in the Methodist Meeting House according to appointment had a good time stayed all night at Bro Hardy walked 5 miles

17th - I and the other Elders helped Bro Hardy husk corn he having a working stayed all night

18th - After dinner helped Bro Hardy cross cut some ties. I & Elder Goff crossed the river to Bro King's stayed all night - walked 2 miles

19th - Went to Bro Hardy's wrote a letter home had a good time with Elders stayed all night at Bro Hardy's

20th - Went to P.O. received a letter from home, all well stayed all night at Mr Holcom's talked on the Gospel walked 3 miles

21st - Crossed the river to Bro Humphries sung hymns talked on the Gospel to Sis Humphries's sister who was on a visit walked 3 miles

I confirmed Mrs Holcomb Elder Carter confirmed Mrs Smith held Meeting with the Saints had a good time Elder Goff speaking on the first principle with great power went to Bro King's after dinner administered to Sis. King also to Elder Keeler he having been unwell sometime Went to Bro P Humphries stayed all night at Bro Collins walked 2 miles

24th - Visited among the Saints with the Elders stayed all night with Bro Hardy walked 2 miles Administered to Sis Holcomb for sickness

25th - Elders Keeler & Carter started for Fannin Co, Elder Goff taking them 10 miles on the way with Bro Hardy's team stayed all night at Bro Hardy's walked 2 miles

26th - Wrote a letter to James Mellor who is in Kansas filling a Mission, went to Mr. Hilyer Ferguson's talked on the Gospel stayed all night

27th - Went to a shucking at Mr Holcomb's I worked between two Methodists and tried to get them into conversation on the Gospel but they were dumb on that subject, went to Post Office received 2 letters all well at home stayed all night at Mr. Holcomb's read the news and talked on the Gospel walked 5 miles

28th - Wrote a letter to Elder Scott how affairs stood in this branch of Church went to Bro Humphries stayed all night walked 2 miles

29th - Raining had an appointment at Nacoochee stopped raining started at 11 a.m. arrived at Mr. Cantrell tired having walked 15 miles in the mud, after supper talked on the Gospel till bed time

30th - Sunday rained most all night very dismal morning the people living so scattered there was not a very large congregation but we had a very good meeting the spirit of God was with us. The people listening attentively, it rained hard most of the day and night

31st - Started back arrived safe although somewhat tired stayed all night at Bro. Collins, walked 15 miles

3rd - Fast day attended Meeting with the Saints had a good time, after dinner at Bro Jos Hardy's went to the P.O. received no mail went to Mr. P Holcomb's read Jos Smith's first Mission talked on the gospel stayed all night, cold wind walked 6 miles

4th - Frost this morning the first this fall in these parts went to Alto P.O. posted some letters bought some paper and ink went to Mr. W. Morris's read and talked on the Gospel stayed all night. Cool weather walked 10 miles

5th - Went to P. Office recieved a letter from Bp. Madsen, went to Bro Jos Hardy's washed & shaved crossed the river to Bro P Humphries spent the evening in reading a sermon of Pres Taylor's also 1 of W. Woodruffs stayed all night walked 7 miles

18th - Washed & changed clothes went to Bro Hardy's shaved, after dinner started for Silver shoals, Banks County went to Mr. W. Morris's stayed all night walked 6 miles

19th - Started at 7:30 a.m. arrived at Silver, Shoals. Went to Mr. Jas Stewart's tired & hungry after dinner tried to get a school house to hold a meeting in but did not succeed the people seem very cold with regard to mormonism stayed all night at Mr. Stewarts talked about Utah & the principles of the Gospel walked 16 miles

20th - Sunday started back arrived at Mr. Morris's tired & hungry stayed all night walked 14 miles

21st - Cloudy looks like rain started to Bro Jos Hardy's arrived all safe wrote a letter to father, after dinner went on mud Creek to see Bro Hardy's Father & Mother had a talk on the Gospel Mr. Thomas Ivie Having come in to see us, stayed all night very rainy walked 7 miles

22nd - Rainy day very disagreable talked I read on the principles of the Gospel sung some hymns Mr. Ed French playing on the Organ, after dinner went to a Mr. Miley King's, after supper 3 men Coming in had a big talk on the principles of the Gospel wound them up so they could not say anything but left as soon possible sung some hymns stayed all night

23rd - Still raining read & talked on the plan of life & Salvation, after dinner administered to a sick child of Mr. King's started to Bro Hardy's rained hard walked 7 miles stayed all night gave out an appointment to preach in the School house on Mud Creek Sunday Dec 4th

24th - Went to P.O. received 2 letters one from home all well, one from Pres. Scott, very cold & windy day, went to Bro Hardy's wrote a letter to Pres Scott stating the conditions of our labors, stayed all night walked 4 miles

25th - Very cold froze very hard last night stayed at Bro J Hardy's till after dinner shaved went to Bro King's read a sermon to the family stayed all night walked 3 miles

26th - Cold frosty morning went to Bro P. Humpheries read the paper stayed all night at Bro Collin's walked 2 miles

27th - Sunday, fine day, attended S. School & Meeting with the Saints had a very good time went to Bro Kings after dinner went to administer to Sis Paynes went back to Bro King's stayed all night walked 2 miles

1st - Fast day met with the Saints had a good meeting the Spirit of God was with us we rejoiced we could meet & worship the Lord in peace blessed a child of Bro King's went to Bro Hardy's & then to the P. O. received a letter from Father all well at Home stayed all night at Bro Hardy's read the D. News talked on the Gospel walked 5 miles

2nd - Fine day went to Mr. Holcombs helped to raise a Log House went to Bro Hardy's stayed all night

3rd - Read, washed I changed clothes & shaved went to Mr. S Holcomb's to spend the evening went back to Bro Hardy's, rainy

4th - Sunday went to Mud Creek to fill an appointment when we got there, there was a mob of about 15 men with hickory's who said we should not preach our corrupt doctrine if we did they would whip us we tryed to reason with them but they was to full of evil spirits to listen to reason. & only two persons being there who cared about hearing us we concluded to with draw, although I think we can do some good in that settlement after awhile it is a good sign when Satan rages so hard. went to Mr. Wiley King's had dinner sung some hymns talked on the Gospel went back to Bro Hardy's having walked 10 miles stayed all night

5th - Cloudy Elder Goff started for Fannin Co. this morning, went across the River to Bro King's our enemies posted up a notice on the line between White & Habarsham Counties which I will write in full

To the Mormons of the County of White, & everywhere else, You are hereby notified not to make anymore Tracks on this side of the River, for you are not fit to pollute the air with your false Doctrine we just give you this note of warning to keep from hurting you, but if you, or any body else comes over into Habersham telling your big Mormon lies any more you will be dealt with almost unmercifully That is you will not get back with all the skin on your backs you had better rake up your subjects & leave the State of Georgia, A word to the wise is enough, Signed, Many Citizens of Habasham County Dec 4th 1881,

6th - Started for Atlanta to see the Cotton Exposition walked 6 miles to Longview boarded the train arrived 3 P.M. 80 miles the train being so crowded had to stand was tired & hungry

7th - Went to the Exposition Grounds 3 miles out of the City. I never saw such a grand sight in my life returned in the evening tired having walked through all the buildings & grounds which is called 9 miles through them

8th - Went and got my likeness to send home went & saw some of the prominent buildings walking about 10 miles

9th - Left by the five a.m. Train for White Co. arrived all safe went to the P.O. received 4 letters & the D.N. went to Bro Hardy's glad to get back tired walked 8 miles

10th - Read the papers & rested heard a report that our enemies was going to meet to agitate driving the Mormons out of this part of the Country but the Lord will overall things for the best therefore I am not uneasy about the matter, cloudy looks like rain, went to Mr Holcomb read a sermon talked on the Gospel stayed all night

11th - Sunday, cold, looks like snow held meeting with the saints had an interesting time received a notice from our enemies as follows

Georgia, Habansham, County

- We citizens of Habersham County, at Rusk Institute assembled to take into consideration the propriety of stopping certain individuals professing christianity from Preaching or advocating doctrine contrary to the Bible and the laws of our Country, we do adopt the following resolutions

- Resolved that all good citizens and orthodox religious denominations be requested to unite to put down & suppress mormonism with all its doctrines, and to discountenance all who favor the same, and we kindly advise all who wish to imbibe such doctrine, to move to a more congenial clime.

- We believing conscientously that the doctrines of Mormonism is calculated to corrupt the Morals of the rising generation and we request all of our citisens who have taken any part in giving encouragement to Mormonism to abandon the same, and unite with us to drive the monster vice from our midst, and we invite all good citizens of the surrounding country to join us in our efforts, and that Clarksville advertiser be requested to publish the above proceedings and that the Mormon leaders be requested to leave the County within thirty days

- To Joseph B. Keeler and other Mormon leaders, you are requested to leave this section of Georgia, within thirty days from date take due notice then and govern yourselves accordingly Dec 10th 1881, signed with 31 names

21st - Very rainy wanted to go up to Nacoochee but to bad weather stayed all night at Bro Humpheries

22nd - Very bad weather went across the river the river being so swollen we could not manage the flat boat we went very nearly over the shoals before landing stayed all night at Mr Canup's walked 4 miles

23rd - Went to P.O. received the mail got a letter from Jas Hanson started for Nacoochee Valley arrived at Mr Cantrills tired having walked 19 miles in the mud facing a cold north wind

25th - Sunday & Christmas day did not hold meeting ate some squirrel for breakfast, commenced to rain it rained without secession for twenty-four hours a very dismal Christmas read talked sung hymns stayed all night at Mr. Calvin Cantrills

26th - Rained till 12 noon after dinner went with Mr Cantrill squirrel hunting did not have any luck stayed all night

27th - Started for Chattahochee around about 2 p.m. tired having walked in the mud 15 miles stayed all night at Bro Humphries

28th - Went to Bro Hardy's wrote 2 letters on to Wm Bown, & one home stayed all night at Mr Holcombs walked 3 miles very rainy night

29th - Started to take some mail matter to the P.O. but could not get across the river it was so swollen stayed all night at Mr Canup's walked 2 miles

30th - Cold windy day posted my letters went to Bro Hardy's stayed all night walked 2 miles

31st - Last day of the year 1881 and I hope my labors will be accepted of the Lord as a missionary for the spread of the Gospel received 3 letters from home 1 from James Mellor 1 from father commenced snowing for the first this winter in these parts stayed with Bro Hardy all night read the paper also a sermon of Pres Taylors

Jan 8th - Sunday held meeting with the Saints heard that our enemies met yesterday to determin what to do about the Mormon Edlers but the Lord overruled things for our good they concluded to give us thirty days more to leave the country in the meantime to send a petition to the Govenor to hear his advice on the matter, it is proving a blessing to the cause of Christ it is making friends to us I hope to make saints Mr Wiley King & Pate Ivie came & told us of the Proceeding of the Mob. They are also investigating our doctrine Went to Bro Hardy took our Valises, he living in Habersham County, having heard the Tax Collector of White County was coming to Collect Pole Tax from us. Jan 26th - Helped Mr Holcom to clean out his well Elder Keeler went to P.O. received a letter from James Mellor went to Bro. Hardy's read the News, Paper stayed all night

Feb 3rd - Elders Carter & Goff arrived from Fannin County was glad to meet them heard that I was to go Haralsen County to labor with Elder John Housten. Elder Keeler being released to go home Elders Carter & Goff to labor in the fields of White & Fannin County Branches Went and spent the evening at Mr P. Holcomb's had a good time I & Elder Goff went & stayed at Bro Hardy's all night

Feb 4th - Very rainy wrote a letter home had a good time with the Elders stayed all night at Bro Hardy's

Feb 5th - Sunday held meeting with the Saints had a good time went to Bro King's had dinner went to Mr Smith's stayed all night walked 2 miles

Feb 6th - Fine day I & Elder Keeler commenced to visit the Saints & friends prior to our leaving went to Mr Halls stayed all night walked 2 miles

Feb 7th - Went to Mr Andersons had a good time, after dinner went to Bro S. Humphries stayed all night walked 4 miles

Feb 8th - Raining crossed the river held meeting in the evening at Mr. S. Holcomb's went to Bro Hardy's stayed all night rained very hard walked 3 miles

Feb 9th - Fine moring after dinner went to Mr Hilliard Furguson's but they not been at home went back to Bro Hardy's stayed all night walked 3 miles

Feb 10 - Fine day the river being so swollen the mail could not cross, hence I did not get any mail went to Mr Holcom's stayed all night

Feb 12th - Sunday had the privilige of baptising 5 persons Elder Keeler Officiating, Namely Spencer Holcomb, Perry Smith, Wiley King & his wife Eliza. & Pate Ivie. held meeting at Mr Holcomb's had a congregation of about 50. had a good time the Spirit of God was poured out abundantly, wrote a letter to Wm Metcalf stayed all night at Bro Hardy's walked 4 miles

Feb 13th - Crossed the river went to Bro Smith's had dinner, rained very hard went to Bro King's stayed all night walked 2 miles

Feb 14th - Went to Bro Collins had dinner went to Bro Humphries stayed all night walked 2 miles

Feb 15th - Crossed the river to Bro Hardy's received a letter from, Elisa R. Bartholomew, Administered to 5 persons went to Bro Holcomb's stayed all night walked 3 miles

Feb 16th - Elders Keeler & Carter went to the P. Office & when returning two men came out of and old house & hailed them & wanted them to go back to them to talk & because they did not the men cursed & swore at them, & followed them Shooting four times at them but through the hand of providence the Elders were not hurt, Tommorrow I & Elder Keeler leave this part of the Country as per appointment. I go to labor in the Northeast part of Georgia & Elder Keeler to return home receivied a letter from Bp Madsen had a good time in the evening with some of the Saints prior to us leaving in the morning stayed all night at Bro Hardy's after administering to Elder Goff & Sis Holcomb. walked 4 miled

Feb 17th - Started at dawn of day walked 6 miles to Depot went to Atlanta arriving at 7:30 P.M. started at 12 Midnight to Rome arriving at 9 a m next Morning

Feb 18th - Arriving at Rome met Elder John Houston whom I was to travel with walked 6 miles to Bro Daniels, tired out having 190 miles stayed all night

Feb 19th - Wrote a letters home went to Bro W Manning's stayed all night walked 3 miles very muddy

Feb 20 - Started for Haywood Chattooga Co arrived at Bro J Barbers tired having walked 15 miles it being very warm stayed all night

Feb 21st - Went to visit Bro Walter Smith & family found them all well went back to Bro Barber's stayed all night

Feb 22nd - Started back to Bro Daniels, Beech Creek Floyd Co. went to Bro Allans had dinner then went to Bro John B. Daniels having walked 15 miles stayed all night

Feb 23rd - Started to Rome to see Elder J B Keeler start for home bid him farewell. I & Elder John Houston went to Polk County to visit some of the Saints arrived at Bro Echols found them all well walked 20 miles they was pleased to see us stayed all night

Feb 24th - After dinner went to Brother Hinemans stayed all night walked 3 miles wrote 2 letters

Feb 25th - Started to go to Bro Ganus's arrived & found them all well and glad to see us walked 12 miles stayed all night

Feb 27th - Went to Bro Thomas L Scott he having just started for Rome did not stay, went on to Bro John P Hamil's Haralson Co. found them all well and glad to see us had a good time talking & singing stayed all night walked 10 miles

March 2nd - Started back to Rome went to Bro Franklin Ganus had dinner went on to Bro John W Ganus stayed all night walked 15 miles

March 3rd - Started to Bro Wilson Hindman stopped at Bro David Hindmans after dinner started on arrived at Bro W Hindmans, found his wife sick stayed all night cheered Sister Hindman she was better in the morning walked 15 miles

Saturday, March 4th - Went to Bro Echols found the family all well stayed all day & night had a good time walked 3 miles

Sunday, March 5th - Went to Rome received 4 letters all well at home, Elder Houstan received instructions about the Emigration from Pres J. Morgan went to Beech Creek stayed all night at Bro John B. Daniels walked 19 miles

Monday, March 6th - Wrote 2 letters went to Brother Tom Littlejohn's stayed all night

Tuesday, March 7th - Went to Rome to see about the Rail Road fare to Chatanooga for the Saints who are going to emigrate to Colorado went to P. Office recieved the D. News, went back to Bro Daniel's stayed all night walked 12 miles

Wednesday, March 8th - Wrote 2 letters. very cold windy day. rained very hard

Thurs March 9th - Very bad wet weather stayed all day & night at Bro Daniels

Friday March 10th - Fine day helped Bro Daniels to make boxes. went & stayed all night at Mr Harrison Swaford walked 2 miles cold wind

Saturday March 11th - Helped to make boxes went to Bro Littlejohnes stayed all night Bro Scott & family arriving from Haralson Co. on there way to Chattanooga

Sunday March 12 - Very rainy day went to Daniels wrote a letter to Bp Madsen went to Mr. Swaford stayed all night walked 2 miles

Monday March 13th - Went to Mr Daniels wrote a letter went to Mr Swaford's helped him to make a Box then went to Bro Manning's stayed all night walked 3 miles

Tuesday March 14 - Started to Polk Co. recieved 5 letters at the Rome P. Office arrived at Bro Lewis Echols tired having walked 22 miles one of Bro Echols children being sick I administered to it.

Wednesday March 15 - After dinner went to Bro Hindman the family being gone. I went back to Bro Echols stayed all night walked 5 miles

Thursday 16th - Wrote a letter to Wm Bown went to Bro Downey's helped him to pack his luggage previous to him and family immigrating to Colorado went to Bro Hindmans not finding them at home returned to Bro Echols walked 4 miles

Friday 17th - Went to Bro Hindman's saw Sis Hindman told her the instruction about getting ready to Emigrate returned to Bro Echols wrote a letter home, Bro Echols went to Rome with 2 loads of Luggage Prior to Saints leaving for Colorado stayed all night walked 4 miles

Saturday 18th - Received a letter from Bro W S King of White Co stating that some ungodly persons had set fire to his fodder stacks & they were consumed & with great difficulty saved his dwelling & his corn by tearing down his crib also firing 4 shots, I wrote 2 letters then went to Bro Hindman's helped to packed his luggage I & bro Samuel Echols stayed all night walked 3 miles

Sunday 19th - Bro S. Echols & I went to Bro Patterson had a conversation then went to Bro James Mitchel stayed all night walked 5 miles

Monday 20th - Went to Rome with Bro. Echols to take a load of luggage, met Elder Houston in Rome went to Shoemaker had my boot repaired then went out to Bro Manning Beech Creek walked 20 miles

Tuesday 21th - Went to Rome to meet the Saints who was going Colorado got every thing prepared to board the train next morning walked 12 miles

Wednesday 22nd - Boarded the train at 8:30 am for Chattanooga, with about Fifty Saints. Arriving at Chattanooga at 1:50 P.M. all well met Pres Morgan. was pleased to see us. Also met Elder Carter had a good time. Pres Morgan Boarded the train at 8:30 PM with about 100 Saints bade adieu to the Saints & Elder Morgan went to a hotel hired a bed traveler 100 miles

Thursday 23rd - Bade Adieu to Elder Carter he going to Fannin Co. I & Elder Houston going to Cassandra went to Bro Fawcet's found them well and pleased to see us & we was pleased to see them for we were tired out having had a hard road to travel of 22 miles stayed all night

Friday 24th - Went to visit the Saints stayed all night at Mr Bailey's

Saturday 25th - Visited the Saints in the neighborhood of Cove Spring Branch Walker Co stayed all night at Bro Faucetts walked 3 miles

Sunday 26th - Went to a cave known as Fricks Cave saw some items of interest went back to Mr Bailey's stayed till after supper went to Mr Faucetts stayed all night walked 2 miles

Monday 27th - Started to Cedar Grove arrived at Bro Gilgore's at 12. noon, after dinner wrote 2 letters, stayed all night walked 7 miles

Tuesday 28th - Stayed all day & night at Bro Gilgore's

Wednesday 29th - Went to Bro Mooney's found the families all well stayed all night walked 3 miles

Thursday 30th - Started for Haywood Valley Chattooga, Co. crossed 3 Mountains arrived at Br J. Barber's tired out found the family not very well in health stayed all night walked 25 miles over a very rough country.

Friday 31st - Started for Beach Creek Floyd Co arrived at Bro Wm Manning's having walked 12 miles found the family well stayed all night

Stayed all night walked 3 miles

Sunday 9th - Held Meeting at Bro Ganus's had a nice turnout, had a good flow of the Spirit of God this is the first Meeting held in this neighborhood hope to do some good, stayed all night at G's

Monday 10th - Wrote a letter to Jos. Bartholomew went to Sister Hyatts stayed all night walked 2 miles

Tuesday 11th - Stayed all day & night at Sister Hyatts talking considerable on the Gospel with her & Husband

Wednesday 12th - Went to Bro John Ganus stayed all night walked 2 miles

Thursday 13th - Called up to go to Sis Mary Gamus and Administered to her baby who was very sick the Lord releaved it from pain We also Blessed & Named it at the same time. But it gradually got worse till death which occured at 5 P.M. We also Blessed another of thier children stayed all night at Bro John Ganus

Friday 14th - Went to Mr J Ganus stayed all night

Saturday 15th - Went to Sis Hyatts had dinner went to P. Office recieved 2 letters all well at home went to Bro Ganus stayed all night wrote a letter home walked 4 miles

Sunday 16th - Held Meeting according to appointment had a very good congregation after meeting a Methodist Preacher raised an argument but confuted his own argument & was the laughing stock to the hearers & he left chagrined, handed out some tracts, stayed all night at Bro J. Ganus's

Monday 17th - Went to the P. Office delivered a letter went back wrote a letter to J B Keller stayed all night at Bro Ganus walked 2 miles

Tuesday 18th - Went to Post Office received the D. News went back read the paper. every thing prosperous in Zion. Wrote a letter to Anthony stayed all night at J. Ganus Jim Walked 3 miles

Wednesday 19th - Started to Paulding County to see Bro & Sis Hindman's relatives went to Bro Franklin, Ganus's Haralson, Co 6 miles, after dinner went on to Bro Wyatt Williams stayed all night Walked 12 miles to Buchanan the Co seet of Haralson

Thursday 20st - Walked 8 miles to Bro John Hamills found the family all well stayed the afternoon and night

Friday 21st - Went to Mrs Elvira Hindman's Me, Garrity's Mill. Paulding Co tryed to get the privilege to hold a Meeting, but could not, the people did not want to hear us, so we stayed with the family 2 days talked on the Gospel a good deal, walked 8 miles

Saturday 22nd - Rained a great portion of last night with heavy thunder & lightening. after dinner went fishing but did not have any luck, went in the River bathing, rained very hard stayed all night at Mrs Hindman's

Sunday 23rd - Fine morning, could not get the privilege to hold Meeting Went to a Methodist Meeting but did not recieve any light on the Gospel. Went back talked to the family on the Gospel stayed all night at Mrs Hindman's walked 5 miles

Monday 24th - Started for Bro John Ganus's Polk Co Arriving at 2 P.M. found the family all well walked 16 miles stayed all night

Tuesday 25th - Wrote 2 letters Went to P.Office stayed all night at Bro Ganus's walked 2 miles

Wednesday 26th - Went to Cedartown Mail some letters, Went to see the Iron Works, which was quite interesting saw 20 Charcoal Ovens each hold about 80-90 cords of wood, buring about 25 Hundred Bus of Coal each taking 8 to 10 days to burn them also saw convicts in the Chain Gang working, which can be hired from the State for 10 cts per day Went to P.O. recieved 3 letters & a D. News, went back to Bro Ganus's stayed all night walked 14 miles

Thursday 27th - Rainy wrote 2 letters to Geo & John Bartholomew. Went to P.O. recieved a letter from home all well, went to Mr Hite's stayed all night walked 2 miles

Friday 28th - Went to Bro Ganus's wrote a letter home went to the Post Office delivered a letter went to Bro J. M. Ganus's stayed all night walked 4 miles. Corn & cotton coming up nice

Saturday 29th - Stayed all day & night at Bro Ganus

Sunday 30th - Very cold day for this time of year, held Meeting according to appointment at Bro Ganus's had a few hearers, but they did not seem to care much about the Salvation of thier souls, but we bore a faithful testimony to them, of the Restoration of the Gospel with all the Gifts Blessing, & Ordinances pertaining thereto & expect to as long as the Lord will help us, it may be like bread cast upon waters to be seen many days hence. Went to John Canus's and stayed all night

Saturday 20th - Started to Morris & Tracy's Saw Mill to fill an appointment, arrived at Bro. Davis Hindmans found them all well. Went to a Methodist Meeting in the evening. Did not recieve any light in regard to life & salvation stayed all night at Bro Hindman's walked 10 miles

Sunday 21st - Held Meeting according to appointment in a vacant house. Had a peacable congregation of about 50 persons. had a good Meeting after dinner went to Brooks Mills found Bro James Mitchell's family all well stayed all night walked 4 miles.

Monday 22nd - Rained all last night & nearly all day. After dinner went to Bro John Patterson's. Held a meeting in the evening a few of the neighbors having come in. Stayed all night

Tuesday 23rd - Went to Sis Hobbs stayed till after dinner. Went to Mr. Lewis Smith read a sermon talked on the Gospel. Stayed all night at Bro Mitchell's

Wednesday 24th - Started back to Bro Ganus stopped and took dinner at Bro Hindmans, arrived at Bro Ganus's went to P. Office recieved the News, Papers stayed all night at Bro John Ganus's walked 12 miles.

Thursday 25th - Went to P.O. received a letter from home all well. in the afternoon helped Bro Ganus bind wheat stayed all night walked 2 miles

Friday 26th - Wrote a letter home went to the P.O. delivered it gave out notice of a meeting next Sunday. Went to Sis. Hites stayed all night at Bro. John Ganus's Walked 5 miles

Saturday 27th - Went to P. Office recieved a letter from Anthony Metcalf. all well at home. Stayed all night at John Ganus's Walked 2 miles.

Sunday 28th - Cloudy & Windy. did not hold Meeting. no congregation. stayed all night at Bro Ganus's

Monday 29th - Fine morning wrote a letter went to the P. Office. After dinner bound wheat stayed all night at Bro Ganus's walked 4 miles

Thursday 1st - We went back to Polk, Co. went to Bro John Banus, wrote a letter to Mary, Chew. Went to P. Office, stayed all night at Bro J. Ganus, walked 8 miles.

June 2nd - Started for Brooks Mill went to Sister Hite's had dinner went via, Cedartown. bought a pair of Pants and Boots arrived at Bro Davis Hindman's stayed all night walked 15 miles

June 3rd - Went outo Brooks Mill called on Bro James Mitchell stayed till after dinner. then went to Bro John Patterson found the children sick with Whooping Cough. Stayed all night at Mr. Lewis Smith walked 7 miles

June 4th - Sunday, after breakfast we went 2 miles to look at a Pond for Baptism purposes. returned then after dinner went to another Pond which we found would do, stayed all night at Bro Mitchells walked 7 miles

June 5th - Mr Lewis T Smith and wife having offered themselves for Baptism, we repaired to Echols, Pond 2 miles distant and attended to the Ordinance. I officiating. also Confirming them at the water's edge. I confirming Bro Smith and Elder Houston Confirming Sister Smith Went to Bro Patterson's stayed all night Walked 5 miles

June 6th - Stayed at Bro Patterson's till after dinner. then We went to Bro L. Smith's stayed all night. Walked 2 miles

June 7th - Started for Bro J. Ganus's went, via, Cedartown. arrived at 6 P.M. at Bro Ganus, tired having walked 20 miles stayed all night.

June 8th - Having received a letter from home and feeling grateful to God to hear of thier good health I answered it stayed all night at Bro John Ganus's

June 9th - Went to Bro Wm Hestley stayed till after dinner. Went to Bro Ganus, wrote a letter to A. Metcalf President John Morgan arrived at Bro Ganus at 9 P.M. in good health was pleased to see him Stayed all night walked 5 miles

June 10th - Had a good time with Bro Morgan recieved a letter from Bro. Ed. Stevenson. stayed all night at Bro J Ganus's

June 11th - Sunday according to an appointment we held two meetings. Pres. Morgan gave some very good instruction had a time of rejoicing Bro. Morgan & I stayed all night at John Ganus

June 12th - Baptised two sons of Bro John Biggers. Elder Houston Officiating in the Ordinance of Baptism. Pres Morgan Confirmed one & I the other stayed all night at Bro Ganus

June 13th - Pres. Morgan bade us adieu going by train to Rome where we will join him in a few days, stayed all night at Bro J. Ganus,

June 14th - Stayed all night at Mr John Ganus,

15th - - Started for Rome to meet Pres. John Morgan. arrived at Bro J. Mitchells at Brook Mill, walked 14 miles, very hot day stayed all night

June 16th - After dinner went to Bro John Patterson then to Mr Downs Knight by invitation stayed all night walked 2 miles

June 17th - Went to Rome met Pres John Morgan. we went to Beach Creek. Floyd County to Bro Wm Manning, stayed all night walked 22 miles

June 18th - Sunday stayed all day night at Bro Manning's went to Methodist Meeting held a Meeting in the Evening at Bro Manning, Pres Morgan occupied the time had a small congregation.

June 19th - After Dinner we started for Haywood Valley Chattooga Co. Went to Bro Allens stayed all night walked 3 miles

June 20th - Stayed all day and night at Bro Allens very warm weather

June 22nd - Went to Bro Walter Smith found the family in good health stayed all night at Bro J Barber

June 23rd - Visited with Saints stayed all night at W. Smith

June 24th - Went to Bro Barber, after dinner I & Pres Morgan went to Mr Steve Anderson, stayed all night walked 3 miles

June 25th - Sunday according to an appointment held Meeting at 3 P.M. at the Meeting house Edlers Houston and Morgan occupied the time very warm day. went to Bro J Barber, stayed all night

June 26th - Started for Rome, Bro J. Barber, taking us in a buggy bade adieu to Pres Morgan he took the train for North Carolina to attend Conference. Elder Houston & I walked out to Bro Manning's traveled 23 miles stayed all night

June 27th - Stayed all night at Bro Manning, wrote 2 letters

June 28th - Started for Polk County stopped at Rome had my Photo taken. went on to Bro Patterson arrived tired having walked 23 miles a very hot day stayed all night

June 29th - Stayed till after Dinner went to Mr Downs Knight got the privilege of holding at his house a meeting on the following Sunday stayed at Bro Mitchell all night

June 30th - Went with Bro Mitchell to Mr Rogers Steam Saw Mill it is the largest I ever saw. Has a Rail Road to haul Logs to Mill & Lumber to Market stayed all night at Bro Lewis Smith walked 6 miles

 

July

July 1st - Visited the Saints, very warm day stayed all night at Bro Smith

July 2nd - Sunday went to Mr Cornelius Bailey had dinner had a very nice rain held a Meeting according to appointment at Mr Downs Knight at which about 50 persons attended had a good time Mr James Lollas invited us home with him which we gladly accepted walked 4 miles stayed all night

July 3rd - Started for Bro John Ganus arriving at 11 P.M. recieved 2 letters one from Bp Madsen one from W. Metcalf. it rained very hard in the evening stayed all night walked 12 miles

July 4th - Went to P. Office recieved 2 letters from home all well, wrote a letter to Bp C.A. Madsen went to Mr John Ganus stayed all night Walked 2 miles

July 5th - Wrote a letter home went to P. Office stayed all night at John Ganus's walked 2 miles

July 6th - Wrote a letter to Bro L. S. King. Went to Bro Wm Hestley stayed all night walked 2 miles

July 7th - Went to Cedartown recieved some papers. went to look at the Iron Works which are very interesting. went to Bro Ganus's stayed all night walked 10 miles

July 8th - Wrote a letter to Wm Metcalf went to P. Office stayed all night J. Ganus's walked 2 miles

July 9th - Sunday went to Methodist Meeting in the forenoon, after held Meeting according to appointment had a good congregation the spirit of God being with us. we had a very good Meeting. I trust the good seed sown will produce good fruit stayed all night at Bro J. Ganus's walked 2 miles

July 10th - Stayed all night at Bro J Ganus. Wrote a letter to E. Stevenson

July 11th - Went to Cedartown to get the mail stayed for dinner at Sis Hite's very warm day statyed all night at Bro Ganus walked 14 miles

July 12th - Went to Bro Biggers's found the family well. After dinner went to Bro Franklin Ganus stayed all night walked 6 miles

July 13th - Went to Bro Jno Hamill's Haralson Co. they were glad to see us it being nearly 3 months since we was there walked 9 miles

July 14th - After dinner went a fishing had a nice time. Lots of bites but a large portion of them was misquitoes bites walked 5 miles

July 15th - Stayed all day & night at Bro H.s

July 16th - Sunday not having any appointment to preach. We and Bro Hamill went to Old Bro Driver's. Elder Houston and Bro Driver went to a Campbelite Meeting. Bro Hamill and I returning home not feeling very well. walked 6 mile, in the evening we blessed Bro & Sis Hamill's babe, two weeks old. I officiating.

July 17th - Bade Adieu to the family went to Bro F. Ganus's hoed cotton in the afternood rained got wet took cold and was quite unwell stayed all night walked 9 miles

July 18th - Started to Polk Co. arrived at Bro John Ganus's found the family all well. went to P.O. recieved a letter from home. all well stayed all night walked 8 miles

July 19th - Wrote a letter home went to P.O. stayed all night at Mr. J. Ganus's walked 2 miles

July 20th - Wrote a letter to Bro Buttle went to P.O. stayed all night at Bro Ganus's

July 21st - Started for Brooks Mills called at Bro. D. Hindman after dinner went to Mr. James Sllas. rained very heavy stayed all night walked 12 miles

July 22nd - Rainy Day went onto Brooks Mill. found the Saints not very well there being a very bad cough among the children. stayed all night at Bro S. Smith's walked 5 miles

July 23rd - Sunday no meeting. to much sickness went to Bro John Patterson's stayed all day and night. walked 4 miles

July 24th - Wrote a letter went to P.O. went to Bro James Mitchell stayed all night. Walked 5 miles

July 25th - Rainy day went to see the Convicts lay Rail road track. Stayed all night Bro. L. Smith's walked 4 miles

July 26th - Went to Bro Hindman's held Meeting in the evening according to appointment stayed all night walked 5 miles

July 27th - Started to Bro J. Ganus's arrived at noon found them all well, after dinner went to P. Office. received the D.N. and two letters one from home and one from James Mellor all well at home stayed all night at Bro Ganus's walked 12 miles

July 28th - Plowed Cotton for Bro Ganus stayed all night. The weather has been pleasant with considerable rain through this month.

July 29th - Went to the P. Office stayed all night at Bro John Ganus's

Aug 4th - Started for Rome to meet Pres. John Morgan. Called at Mr Doc Hindman.s had dinner. then went to Mr James Lollas's stayed the night walked 12 miles

Aug 5th - Went to Mr Niel Baily had dinner. then went & saw the convicts work on the R Road stayed all night at Bro Lewis Smith walked 4 miles.

Aug 6th - Sunday, did not hold Meeting walked 7 miles towards Rome stopped at a Mr Rich all night. he being a Methodist Preacher talked with him and left some tracts with him to read

Aug 7th - Went on to Rome met Pres J Morgan had an enjoyable time with him. He to the train at Noon for Alabama Elder Houston & I went on the tower had a good view of the City & surrounding Country. went to Bro Manning's Beach Creek found the Family all well stayed all night walked 16 miles

Aug 8th - After dinner went to Bro James Allens's stayed all night walked 3 miles

Aug 9th - Started for Brooks, Mill. arrived at Bro Pattersons tired having walked 20 miles

Aug 10th - Visited among the saints stayed all night at Bro Lewis Smith walked 2 miles

Aug 11th - Went to Bro J. Ganus's found the family well stayed all night walked 15 miles very rainy weather

Aug 12th - Recieved a letter from home all in good health, heard of Anthony baby's death. as also of fathers affliction in his eyes of which made me feel very sorry. Wrote a letter home, I have a very lame back through taking a bad cold stayed all night at Bro J. Ganus's

Aug 13th - Sunday did not get the oppurtunity to hold Meeting, the Annual Protracted Meetings are going on so not much chance for Mormons. Wrote a letter home to Father & Mother my back no better stayed all night at Bro Ganus

Sept 17th - Sunday went to Baptist Meeting they appointed a Committee to see to the building a church. The Preacher said he was willing that any denomination should preach in it but the Mormons saying their (the Mormon) Doctrine was not orthodox. fullfilling Jesus saying, they will put you out of their synagogue yea the time cometh that whosever killeth you will think he is doing God service. went to Bro Patterson stayed all night

Oct 24th - Wrote 2 letters 1 home & 1 to Bro. L.S. King. Elder G. J. Parrish arrived from Utah to join Elder Houston being released to return home stayed all night at Bro Ganus. Walked 2 miles

Oct 25th - Attended to the Baptism of Mr. Wyatt, Miles, Parker. I officiating. Elder Houston Confirming him. Elder Parrish & Myself went & stayed all night at J. Ganus's

Oct 26th - Wrote a letter to A. Metcalf went to P.Office. after dinner started to Haralson Co. went to Bro Franklin Ganus's found them in good health stayed all night walked 7 miles

Oct 27th - Started to Bro J. Hamill's arrived found the family well walked 8 miles. Stayed till after Sunday on which day we held a meeting

Oct 30th - Started to Polk Co arrived at Bro F. Ganus's the family was enjoying good health stayed all night walked 8 miles

Oct 31st - Went on to Bro J. Ganus's then to P.Office recieved no letters stayed at Bro John Ganus's till the 2nd Nov helped him to pull & haul corn.

Nov 2nd - Elder Parrish & Myself went by the way Cedartown to Brooks's Saw Mill. I recieved a letter from home. all well which I am thankfull to my Father in Heaven. Stayed all night at Jas. Lollace, walked 15 miles

Nov 3rd - Went to Bro. Mitchells found the family enjoying good health stayed all night walked 3 miles

Nov 4th - We started at Day break for Rome went to the Court House and heard a Political Speech from Mr. Felton went to Bro Manning's Beech Creek found the family well walked 23 miles stayed till the morning of the 6th resting over Sunday

Nov 6th - We started for Rome to see Elder Houston leave for home bad him adieu. Elder J. Parrish & myself going to Brooks Mill arrived at Bro Mitchell's tired having walked 23 miles We visited among friends and Saints till the 13th when we started for Bro J.J. Barber's Haywood Valley

Nov 13th - We started for Haywood Valley stayed all night in Rome at the Hotel, Walked 15 miles

Nov 14th - Wrote a letter home, posted it Went to Bro Jas Allens's stayed all night walked 7 miles

Nov 15th - Went to Bro Jno J Barber Haywood Valley found the family well stayed all night walked 12 miles

Nov 16th - Very cold night, last night quite frosty this morning. after breakfast we went fishing but did not have very good luck, we then went to look over Bro Barber's farm. Visited the Saints in this neighborhood till the 20th held meeting on Sunday had an enjoyable time the first Meeting in three weeks.

Nov 20th - Rainy Morning. Bro W. Smith took us to Rome in his buggy we then boarded a Freight Train arrived at Bro Jan Mitchell's Polk Co at 4 P.M. it snowed about 3 inches very cold weather traveled 32 miles stayed till after dinner on the 22nd

Nov 22nd - Started for Bro J. Ganus, Polk Co. Stopped all night walked 15 miles stayed till the afternoon of the 24th then went to Sister Hite found them well walked 5 miles

Nov 25th - Went back to Bro J. M. Ganus's stayed all night

Nov 26th - Wrote some letters went & stayed all night Mr. Jno Ganus's

Nov 27th - We went to Bro Wm Hestleys found the family all well stayed all night walked 3 miles

Nov 28th - We went to Bro J. M. Ganus's walked 3 miles wrote a letter home stayed all night

Nov 29th - Went to Sis Hite's it snowed very hard very cold went back to Bro J. M. Ganus's stayed all night walked 5 miles

Nov 30th - Started for Buchanan, Haralson Co. we called at Bro Wiley Davidson had dinner then went on called to see Sister Addison found her & children feeling well. we went on to Bro Wyatt Williams, Buchanan. Found them well, but they had suffered a loss in having their kitchen burnt down with all that was in it which was quite a serious loss. Walked 12 miles

 

December

Dec 1st - Visited Bro Jno Biggers found them well went back to Bro Williams walked 3 miles

Dec 2nd - We went to Bro J. Hamill's found them feeling well walked 8 miles had a talk on the principles of the gospel (with a family who was living in Bro Hamil's house) on Saturday & Sunday nights. I think they will obey the Gospel.

Dec 4th - Bade Adieu to Bro Hamill & family started for Bro J. M. Ganus called at Franklin Ganus had dinner. Then went on arrived at Bro J. M. Ganus found them all well walked 15 miles. Stayed till Dec 6th Bad them good bye started for James Lollas arrived noon found Mrs. Lollas much improved in health stayed all night walked 12 miles

Dec 7th - Went to Bro Mitchells they was all well after dinner went to P.Office recieved no mail. Went back stayed all night walked 7 miles

Dec 8th - Very cold day wrote a letter to Jos Bartholomew, Sen. went to P.O. then to Mr. D. Holmes stayed all night had a pleasant evening walked 5 miles

Dec 9th - Very cold weather after dinner went to P.O. recieved two letters one from Acel & one from home. all well thank the Lord walked 5 miles stayed till Monday Brother Mitchells rainy disagreeable day yesterday stayed in the house all day

Dec 11th - Wrote a letter home also one to Elder A. H. Snow. Chattanooga. We went & took dinner with Sister Hobbs then went to P.O. We went to Mr Downs Knight being invited to stay all night but he being away from home we went back to Bro Jas Mitchell's walked 6 miles

Dec 12th - Visited Mr Bailey's found them well stayed till after dinner talked on the Gospel then went back to Bro Mitchell's Walked 7 miles

Dec 13th - Rainy day wrote a letter to Acel Einarson went to James Lollas's his wife is improving in health stayed all night walked 2 miles

Dec 14th - Went to P.O. posted a letter to Acel Einarson went to Bro Mitchell stayed all night walked 7 miles

Dec 15th - We went to Mr. Downs Knight & found them well & pleased to see us. had a pleasant evening

Dec 16th - Went to Bro Mitchell's stayed all night. Walked 5 miles

Dec 17th - Went to Mr. Holmes read and talked on the Gospel. stayed all night walked 3 miles. Very cold weather

Dec 18th - Went to Bro Wm. R. Manning's Beach Creek, Floyd Co. called at Rome P.Office recieved 3 papers & 3 letters all well at home walked 20 miles.

Dec 19th - Cold day wrote a letter home also a card to Elder A H Snow letting him the I would meet him in Rome on the 24th Inst, he having sent me word he would be there on that date if all is well stayed at Bro Manning till the morning of the 21st

Dec 21st - Started for Haywood Valley arrived at Bro Jno Barber's very tired the roads being very muddy walked 12 miles.

Dec 23rd - Bro Barber & Myself went to Rome in his carriage to meet Elder A. H. Snow who was coming to pay us a visit during the holidays. Met him at Depot 10 A.M. 24th Went to Haywood arrived at day traveled 38 miles roads were very muddy Visited the Saints in the neighborhood till the morning of the 28th

Dec 28th - Started for Rome arrived at Bro Manning's stayed all night walked 12 miles

Dec 29th - Started to Rome before daylight with Elder A. H. Snow he going to Chattanooga to meet with Elders Missionaries, from Colorado for the Southern States. Elder Parrish & Myself bade adieu wth Elder Snow at Rome. took the train went 15 miles to Bro Mitchell it snowing very hard. arrived found them well traveled 20 miles

Dec 30th - Went to P.Office then to Mr. D.H. Holmes found them well stayed over sang talked on the Gospel. I think they will join the church surlong. the old year went out with fine weather and a very succesful year in the missionary field in the S States

Jan 1st - We went to P.Office then to Mr Jas. Lollas stayed all night walked 10 miles.

Jan 3rd - Went to P.Office then to Bro Mitchell's found Elder Parrish there he having gone there yesterday walked 5 miles. visited amoung saints & friends till the morning of the 8th where we started to Bro J. Ganus's arrived tired, the roads being very muddy traveled 15 miles stayed at Bro Ganus till the 15th it being very Stormy & cold. I went to Cedartown on Saturday recieved a registered letter from home. walked 15 miles

Jan 15th - Started to Haralson Co went to Bro J Hamills found the family all enjoying good health walked 15 miles. It being so rainy we stayed at Bro Hamills till Jan 22nd then went to Bro John Ganus, went to P.Office got the D. News it is so cold freezing weather the people say it is the hardest winter there has been for a good many years in the S. States.

Jan 25th - Went to Bro. Miller's, met Elder Samuel Echol from Colorado he having been called to fill a mission in the S. States this is his native land he having left it 10 months since visited among Saints & friends there.

Feb. 1st - When we started for Haywood Valley, met Elder C.B. Moyers in Rome went to Bro. Mannings, found them all well, stayed till Feb 5th when we came to Bro J.J. Barbers, Haywood Valley. Found them all enjoying good helath & spirites, & pleased to see us. Walked 40 miles. some threatening of a Mob driving us out from Brooks Mill but we rely on the Lord hence we feel all right. & mean to do our duty with the help of the Lord. visited with the saints held meeting on Sunday, had an enjoyable time; the weather had become rainy & disagreable the past few days left Harwood on the 13th Feb Bro Barber taking us to Rome with his team parted company with Elders Parrish & Moyers in Rome. Elder Echols & Myself went to Brooks Mill stayed at Bro Hestley.s all night traveled 25 miles

Feb 14th - Blessed Mrs Hestley's baby, bade the family good Bye, went on to James Lollas walked 8 miles visited among the Saints & friends, had the privilege of baptizing Mr James Lollas & Wife Sunday Feb 18th which makes our hearts to rejoice to see two more souls on the road to salvation. received letters from home all enjoying good health for which I thank God our Heavenly Father.

Feb 19th - Received my release from (Pres. John, Morgan) to return home when the 29th March Emigrant Company leaves Chattanooga for Colorado.

Feb 20th - Wrote home informing them of my release, asked them to send me money, we blest four of Bro Mitchell's children

Feb 22nd - We went to Bro J. M. Ganus found them well walked 15 miles stayed till Feb 25th then went to Bro. J. P. Hamill's found them all well walked 15 miles. the weather is very rainy & roads muddy I have a bad cold with cough.

Feb 27th - Bade Bro Hamill's family fare well. it being my last visit went on to Buchanan called at Bro Biggers had a good chat bade them good bye. went on to Bro Wyatt Williams stayed all night walked 8 miles

Feb 28th - Bade Bro Williams & family farewell went on to Sis Attison; had dinner & a good chat bade her good bye, went on to John Ganus walked 15 miles stayed all night my cough is not any better

March 2nd - We bade Bro. J. M. Ganus family good bye, walked to Brooks Mill found the Saints enjoying good health received 4 letters; all well at home also one from a Miss A. W. Dudley of Marlow inquiring about the principles of the gospel. also inquiring if I knowed of a vacancy amongst the Schools as a teacher as she had to maintain herself by teaching. I wrote her in regard to our belief & sent her some tracts, which, I trust will do good turn, 5 pages

March 5th - Made up Conference report for the 6 months ending, Feb 28th 1883 and sent it to Pres. John Morgan. There is at the presant time 140 Member in Georgia Conference.

March 10th - We went west to Bro W. R. Manning's Beech Creek, Met Elders Orson, M. Willsow V William F. Rigby from Utah walked 25 miles

March 11th - Elders Parrish & Moyers came from Haywood Valley to Meet us we had an enjoyable time together

March 12th - Elders Moyers & Myself went to Rome where I recieved money from home for to pay my fare home, we then went to Mr Bailey's stayed all night walked 20 miles

March 13th - Went to Haywood found the Saints all well. Met the Elders who had gone there yesterday walked 10 miles visited the Saints till March 16th then started to Polk Co. We blessed Bro J. J. Barber's baby. I being mouth. Bade them all adieu. Elder C. M. Wilson & myself went to Bro Wm. Manning walked 15 miles stayed all night.

March 16th - Went to Rome then to Bro Hestley's walked 20 miles

March 17th - We went to Bro Jan. Lollas, found them well & ancious for the time to come to emigrate which will be on the 29th March. Walked 10 miles. helped the Saints who are going to emigrate to pack up their luggage. visited among the Saints till the 26th then went to Bro Allen's Floyd Co walked 20 miles met Elders Parrish & Moyers in Rome.

March 25th - Went to Bro Mannings walked 3 miles
