DOCUMENTATION

HUSBAND John Edward METCALF, Sr.

CHRISTENING: Holy Trinity Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0990828

MARRIAGE_1: Mary Waslin: St. Mary, Sculcoates Parish Register Bishops Transcript; FHL film 0919440. Anthony Simpson was one of the witnesses. Married by banns, both of this parish.

LDS_BAPTISM: Hull member record; FHL film 087004. Baptized in Hull by Geo Edw Taylor, confirmed 21 Oct 1849 by James McNaughton. Baptized at Hull.

MARRIAGE_2: Cecelia Anderson: EHOUS Sealings of Couples-living; #13320; FHL film 0183396. Cecelia Anderson doesn't appear to me to have ever lived with John Edward Metcalf, Sr. after the plural sealing. See her notes.

MARRIAGE_3: Endowment House Sealings of Couples, living & proxy; Book L 1878-1883; FHL film 183402; page 459. John Edward Metcalf born 13 July 1812 Hull, Yorkshire, England & Ann Dearing born 15 Oct 1813, Seaton, Yorkshire, England. Sealed 8 Oct 1883 by D.H. Wells at the Endowment House. Witnesses John Smith, John M. Stucki. Note that I am unclear about what her birth name is. Her tombstone reads "Ann Dearing Metcalf." Her sealing record has Ann DEARING. Her endowment entry in the IGI has her name Ann DEARING, but that entry gives her father as Francis BILLTON. That entry is extracted from the temple record, where she would have used the name she was going by at the time. Perhaps DEARING was a first husband?

DEATH-BURIAL: Journal History of the Church Feb 1887; FHL film 1259785: A reprint of his obituary from the Deseret Evening News. Fayette Ward Membership Record; FHL film 0025955 reads: "Feb 4th 1887, John E. The inscription for his wife is on the oposite side of this monument. On the front of the monument is this inscription: "Father, Mother, how we miss you. Miss your counsel in our homes. But what is death tis natures sleep Then rest dear Parents rest in peace, Untill the resurrection morn, When the trump of God will burst The barriers of the tomb."

WIFE     Ann BILTON

BURIAL_PLACE: Tombstone seen at Fayette Cemetery, Fayette, Sanpete, Utah by Vauna Kelly 5 June 2000.  The stone is a modern stone with the name Ann Dearing Metcalf and the spots for dates missing.  This marker is identical in style to numerous others in the Fayette Cemetery.  As per phone call 8 June 2000 with Janice Bown, Fayette Town Clerk & Sexton, this and the other markers like it are the result of an Eagle Scout Project done by a Fayette teen in about the 1980's - 1990's.  His goal was to memorialize the old unmarked graves in the Fayette Cemetery and he used available sources for grave locations & dates.
BUT...
Dearing descendant Kristen Moore has seen and photographed her tombstone in Salt Lake City Cemetery and has confirmed that she is buried there. That tombstone is a stone dating to the period. It is apparent that she is buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery and the modern stone in the Fayette Cemetery is a mistake.

MARRIAGE-SEALING_SPOUSE: (Metcalf) Endowment House Sealings of Couples, living & proxy; Book L 1878-1883; FHL film 183402; page 459. John Edward Metcalf born 13 July 1812 Hull, Yorkshire, England & Ann Dearing born 15 Oct 1813, Seaton, Yorkshire, England. Sealed 8 Oct 1883 by D.H. Wells at the Endowment House. BIRTH-DEATH-PARENTS-BAPTISM-ENDOWMENT-SEALING_PARENTS: IGI

NAME: Her tombstone reads "Ann Dearing Metcalf." Her sealing record has Ann DEARING.  Her endowment entry in the IGI has her name Ann DEARING, but that entry gives her  father as Francis BILLTON.  That entry is extracted from the temple record, where she would have used the name she was going by at the time.  Perhaps DEARING was a first husband?  Also, the same IGI entry has her mother's name Mary LEE, but I wonder if her last name is actually LEACH.  In the late 1880's & early 1890's the Metcalfs did a lot of temple work in the Manti Temple for people with the last names of Bilton and Leach with the relationship always given as "Rel."  I've always wondered who they were, and I think maybe we've figured that out!

CHRISTENING: IGI: source is the extracted christening record: Ann BILTON christened 26 Oct 1817 Sigglesthorn, Yorkshire, England, father Francis BILTON, mother Mary.  Sigglesthorne is a few miles from Seaton.

MARRIAGE_1: (Dearing) IGI; source is the extracted marriage record: Ann BILTON married William DEARING 8 Feb 1834 Leven, Yorkshire, England.  Leven is a few miles from Sigglesthorn and Seaton.  The IGI reveals 6 children born to this couple:
Mary Elizabeth DEARING chr 10 Jul 1835 Sigglesthorne  (extracted chr rec)
Hannah DEARING chr 26 Nov 1837 Leven (extracted chr rec)
Pamela DEARING chr 17 Sep 1843 Leven (extracted chr rec)  Note there is also a submitted entry for her:
Amelia West DEARING born 22 Aug 1843 Leven (submitted)
Margaret DEARING born 15 Dec 1846 Leven (submitted entry)  There is also an extracted chr rec for her:
Margaret DEARING chr 7 Jul 1850 Leven (extracted chr rec).
Janet or Jennet DEARING born 16 Mar 1849 Leven (submitted)  There is also an extracted chr record:
Janet DEARING chr 7 Jul 1850 Leven (extracted chr rec)
Harriet DEARING chr 5 Mar 1854 Leven (extracted chr rec)  Note there is another submitted entry:
Harriet DEARING born 20 Apr 1852 Kingston upon Hull (submitted)

MARRIAGE_1: (Dearing) e-mail from 3rd great grand daughter Kristen Cowburn Moore:
Ann Bilton and William Dearing were married.  I am their ggg granddaughter.  Harriet Dearing her daughter was married to my gg grandpa Henry Thomas Cowburn.  Both of their 2 sons were married to my great grandma (Theresa marion Buller).  William Dearing Cowburn married her first and they had my grandpa and 2 other siblings.  Then william died when my grandpa was two.  Two years later his brother Henry Ridsdill Cowburn married Theresa so the children could keep the Cowburn name. I live in Orem, Utah.   Henry Thomas Cowburn and Harriet Dearing Cowburn immigrated here from Kingston Upon the Hull, Yorkshire England in about 1879.  Ann came with them and also her daughters, Jennette Dearing Gamen and Margaret Dearing Sexton along with their children, their husbands came later. 1880 census records show them living with Henry Thomas Cowburn and Harriet Dearing Cowburn. Henry as head of household.

Why am I confident that the Ann Dearing who married John Edward Metcalf (and whose father's last name was Bilton) is the same person as the Ann Bilton who married William Dearing?
**One of her Dearing grandchildren (Janet's son) bears the middle name of Bilton
**Her daughter Harriet Dearing Cowburn's death certificate (died in Salt Lake City, Utah) lists her parents as William Dearing, born England and Ann Bilton, born England
**Proxy temple work her Dearing children did for her give the same birthdate & birthplace that she gave when she was sealed to John E Metcalf.

SPOUSE_1: (William DEARING) John Gardiner indicates that, though he is not directly related, he has a Dearing family connection in the area around Leven.  He says: " I have a note of a William Dearing born 1817 to Thomas/Jane in Sculcotes and an assumed death of S[eptember Quarter] 1876 age 59  [Civil Reg] ref. Sept Quarter 1876 Sculcotes 9d 129." FamilySearch has a death date for him of 17 August 1876, contributed by a Dearing descendant.

So. here is a timeline:
Her husband William Dearing died in England in 1876.
In 1879 she was baptized a member of the LDS Church.
I don't find Ann in the 1880 or 1900 census, but in the Salt Lake, Utah 1900 census, her daughter Harriet Dearing Cowburn and her husband Henry T state that they immigrated from England in 1878. Daughter Margaret Dearing Saxton (living in Idaho) states that she and her husband Thomas immigrated in 1880. One can see Ann's Dearing family and descendants at new.FamilySearch.org.
