DOCUMENTATION

HUSBAND Thomas METCALF

CHRISTENING: Holy Trinity Parish Reg Bishops Trans; FHL film 990828: son of Betty Metcalfe

PARENTS: Family records (fam rec source is Manti Temple records) gave father's name as "Mr. Metcalf," mother's name Elizabeth MEGGITT with her death date 20 Jan 1830. However, her burial record (date 20 Jan 1830) gives her name as Elizabeth MEGGITT. MEGGITT was supposed to be her birth name, METCALF her married name and she would have been buried under her married name. Was Meggitt her birth name as family records stated, or her married name? Next found the marriage some 30 yrs earlier of John Meggitt & Elizabeth Metcalfe, followed by the birth of 3 children. 14 years prior to this marriage is the chr of Thomas, son of Betty Metcalfe. Finally found the 1766 chr of Elizabeth Metcalf, father Thomas Metcalf. Searched for a will left by John Meggitt or someone to provide the proof that Thomas Metcalf was the illegitimate son of this Elizabeth Metcalf who later married John Meggitt. None found. Did find that when J.E. Metcalf Jr did LDS temple work for his ancestors in 1888 he did a baptism for John Meggett born 1810, died 1827. This John Meggitt is known to be the son of John Meggitt & Elizabeth Metcalf, thus proving that the Elizabeth Metcalf who married John Meggitt is Thomas' mother (why else would we be doing her son John's temple work?). Birth father unknown, Bastardy Bonds search negative.

SEALING_PARENTS_INVALID: MANTI Sealings of children to parents; book C; FHL film 170494, date of this slg: 22 Jul 1898, "sealed to Gt Gd Father Metcalf and Elizabeth Meggett Metcalf." Temple Dept says (1-10-94) this slg is not valid, since there is no such person as Gt Gd Father Metcalf & she was Elizabeth Metcalf Meggitt. Birth father unknown. Per Temple Dept should be sealed to step-father John Meggitt & mother Elizabeth Metcalf

MARRIAGE_1: St. Mary, Sculcoates Parish Reg Bishops Transcript; FHL film 919438: "Thos Metcalfe B & Jane Gill S. both of this parish by banns."

MARRIAGE_2: Holy Trinity Parish Reg Bishops Transcript; FHL film 919483. "Thomas Metcalf of this parish Cordwainer & Ann Davis of this parish widow by banns." Note: Ann's first husband Philip Davis was a shoemaker. Perhaps she met Thomas through her 1st husband.

BURIAL: Manti Baptisms FHL film 0170380, Holy Trinity, Hull Parish Reg Bishops Trans; FHL film 0990832. Abode Myton. Age at time of burial: 50

OCCUPATION: Cordwainer; Source: Christening rec of son George Thomas Metcalf. A cordwainer was a leather worker, specifically in cordovan and is also a shoemaker.

RESIDENCE: 1815: Dagger Lane, Kingston upon Hull

WIFE Jane GILL

CHRISTENING: St Mary, Hull Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 990838; "Jane dau of John Gill Cordwainer by Ann his wife."

MARRIAGE: St. Mary, Sculcoates Parish Reg Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0919438; "Thomas Metcalfe B & Jane Gill S. both of this parish by banns."

BURIAL: Holy Trinity, Hull Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 919483. Abode Hull, age 32

BIRTH: Manti Temple records & her given age at death (32) indicate she was born 1792 but that would have made her 18 when married. A minor needed parents' consent and the consent would be noted in this marriage record. No such consent was noted. Note that she married days after her 20th birthday.

PARENTS: Manti Temple records give Jane's father's name as Edward Gill. BUT. It is documented that Elizabeth Gill who was born 25 Jun 1798 in York is Jane's sister and it is documented that Elizabeth's parents were John Gill & Ann Thornton. Edward Gill did exist. It is this researcher's (Vauna Green) conjecture that the he was a relative--I think John Gill's brother, and his children's uncle. John Edward Metcalf Jr, who did the work in the Manti Temple, was 9 at the time of Edward Gill's death… Perhaps he misunderstood Edward Gill (after whom he seems to be named) to be his great grandfather instead of his great uncle. John Gill had died when his children were very young--all the more reason for his brother to take an active part in the children's upbringing. This is all pure speculation of course.

BAPTISM: Manti Baptisms for the Dead; Book A; pg 407; FHL film 0170380; copy poss of Vauna Green: Jane Gill born 1792 Hull, York, Engl. Died 16 May 1824. Jane Ann Metcalf Bown proxy, rel Gr. Daut.

CHILD 1 John Edward METCALF, Sr.

CHRISTENING: Holy Trinity Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0990828

MARRIAGE_1: Mary Waslin: St. Mary, Sculcoates Parish Register Bishops Transcript; FHL film 0919440. Anthony Simpson was one of the witnesses. Married by banns, both of this parish.

LDS_BAPTISM: Hull member record; FHL film 087004. Baptized in Hull by Geo Edw Taylor, confirmed 21 Oct 1849 by James McNaughton. Baptized at Hull.

MARRIAGE_2: Cecelia Anderson: EHOUS Sealings of Couples-living; #13320; FHL film 0183396. Cecelia Anderson doesn't appear to me to have ever lived with John Edward Metcalf, Sr. after the plural sealing.

MARRIAGE_3: Endowment House Sealings of Couples, living & proxy; Book L 1878-1883; FHL film 183402; page 459. John Edward Metcalf born 13 July 1812 Hull, Yorkshire, England & Ann Dearing born 15 Oct 1813, Seaton, Yorkshire, England. Sealed 8 Oct 1883 by D.H. Wells at the Endowment House. Witnesses John Smith, John M. Stucki. Note that I am unclear about what her birth name is. Her tombstone reads "Ann Dearing Metcalf." Her sealing record has Ann DEARING. Her endowment entry in the IGI has her name Ann DEARING, but that entry gives her father as Francis BILLTON. That entry is extracted from the temple record, where she would have used the name she was going by at the time. Perhaps DEARING was a first husband?

DEATH-BURIAL: Journal History of the Church Feb 1887; FHL film 1259785: A reprint of his obituary from the Deseret Evening News. Fayette Ward Membership Record; FHL film 0025955 reads: "Feb 4th 1887, John E. Metcalf Sr. died at a quarter past 5 p.m."

BIRTH-DEATH-BURIAL_PLACE: Tombstone monument seen at Fayette, Utah by Vauna Marie Green 5 June 2000: "In Memory of John E. Metcalf." Born July 13, 1812. At Hull Yorkshire England Died Feb. 4, 1887." The inscription for his wife is on the oposite side of this monument. On the front of the monument is this inscription: "Father, Mother, how we miss you. Miss your counsel in our homes. PARENTS: This child is not 100% certain as there were 3 Thomas Metcalfs bearing children in the area at the time. However, the circumstances indicate that our Thomas/Jane Metcalf are the parents: 1) one Thomas lived in Sculcoates. Our Thomas & Jane are known to be living in Hull. 2) The other Thomas lived in Myton & md in Jan, after birth of this child. 3) Jane Metcalf died 2 months later at the age of 32--complications of childbirth?
