DOCUMENTATION

HUSBAND John GILL

MARRIAGE: Holy Trinity, Hull Parish Register Bishops Transcript; FHL film 0990828

DEATH: Salt Lake Baptsms index cards; FHL film 0183595: "born abt 1762 of York, York, died 1798, md Ann Thornton." Also dau Elizabeth's chr rec reads "dau of the late John Gill shoemaker deceas'd by Ann his widow."

OCCUPATION: Cordwainer. Source: children's chr rec. Note: son-in-law Thomas Metcalf was a cordwainer. A cordwainer was a leather worker, specifically in cordovan and is also a shoemaker. (son John & dau Eliz chr records have his occupation shoemaker)

PARENTS: WHAT FOLLOWS IS PURE SPECULATION: I believe Edward Gill to be John Gill's brother (see daughter Jane Gill's notes). The trick, then, is to find a family that has two sons--Edward & John--that fit the following criteria: Edward was born abt 1764 and did not die in the place he was born (Edward died in Tynmouth, Northumberland but was not born in Northumberland County). We don't know when John was born, but he did not marry in the place he was born (John married in Hull and does not appear to be from Hull). Knowing that something like 90% of Yorkshire parishes have been extracted and are in the IGI, I did an IGI search for a family that meets these criteria. There are two families that fit. One is way off in Westmoreland county. The other is the Edward Gill/Grace Herrington family of Cundall, Yorkshire. Cundall is just up the River Ouse from York, where John is known to have lived with his wife and children. I am currently trying to prove or disprove this connection. Here is a link to the FGR of Edward Gill & Grace Herrington. AGAIN, THIS IS NOTHING BUT SPECULATION.

RESIDENCE:

1789-1794: Hull at time of marriage & christening of older children

1796-1798: City of York, Holy Trinity-Kings Court (Christ Church) parish

1796: as per son John's christening rec, lived in Newgate in the City of York

WIFE Ann THORNTON

MARRIAGE_1: John Gill: Holy Trinity, Hull Parish Register Bishops Transcript; FHL film 0990828

MARRIAGE_2: Joseph Hinscliffe: Holy Trinity, Kings Court (otherwise Christ Church), York Parish Register Transcription with index, 1716-1812; FHL film 0908279. In index this marriage is the only entry for any Hinscliffe.

BURIAL: Holy Trinity, Hull Parish Register; FHL film 1657074. Name spelled Inchcliffe, no spouse mentioned, Pauper

PARENTS: On first glance she appears to be the daughter of George Thornton of Hull, however that Ann died at age 1. Christening record (1796) of Ann's son John reads: "dau of William Thornton deceas'd" This leads us to believe that her father William THORNTON was dead by 1796. Note that there is a Thomas Thornton in the same York parish (Kings Court-Christ Church) who has a son christened in 1787. The record reads "8 May 1787 Thomas Thornton chr s of Thomas Thornton Shoemaker (son of Wm Thornton of St. Michl le Belfrey) by Elizabeth his wife dau of George Dobson of Fulforth basketmaker." Note that this Thomas Thornton is a Shoemaker. Could Thomas Thornton and Ann Thornton be siblings? IGI search does not reveal any Thomas & Ann -children of William Thornton- christenings that clearly fit this scenario, While this relationshiop remains a possibilty, we should not assume that Ann Thornton's father was the William Thornton from St. Michel le Belfrey parish. There were a lot of William Thorntons in Yorkshire and they all seem to have named a daughter Ann!

CHILD 1 Jane GILL

CHRISTENING: St Mary, Hull Parish Reg Bishops Transcript; FHL film 990838: "Jane dau of John Gill Cordwainer by Ann his wife"

MARRIAGE: St. Mary, Sculcoates Parish Reg Bishops Trans; FHL 0919438. "Thomas Metcalf B & Jane Gill S. both of this parish by banns"

BURIAL: Holy Trinity, Hull Parish Reg Bishops Trans; FHL film 919483. Abode: Hull, age 32

BIRTH: Manti Temple records & her given age at death (32) indicate she was born 1792 but that would have made her 18 when md. A minor needed parents' consent and the consent would be noted in mg rec. No such consent was noted. Note that she married days after her 20th birthday.

PARENTS: Manti Temple records give Jane's father's name as Edward Gill. BUT. It is documented that Elizabeth Gill who was born 25 Jun 1798 in York is Jane's sister and it is documented that Elizabeth's parents were John Gill & Ann Thornton. Edward Gill did exist. It is this researcher's (Vauna Green) conjecture that the he was a relative--I think John Gill's brother, and his children's uncle. John Edward Metcalf Jr, who did the work in the Manti Temple, was 9 at the time of Edward Gill's death… Perhaps he misunderstood Edward Gill (after whom he seems to be named) to be his great grandfather instead of his great uncle. John Gill had died when his children were very young--all the more reason for his brother to take an active part in the children's upbringing. This is all pure speculation of course.

CHILD 2 GILL

BIRTH: christening record of John Gill chr 1796 says he was the 5th child of John & Ann Gill--we have yet to identify a child that fits into this family to make him the 5th child.

CHILD 3 Mary Ann GILL

BURIAL: Holy Trinity, Hull Parish Register Bishop's Transcript 1762-1813; FHL film 0990828; "Mary Ann d of John and Ann Gill"

PARENTS: This child is not 100% certain as there were two John Gill/Ann couples in Hull. However, circumstances indicate that she is most likely the child of John Gill/Ann Thornton. The chr rec of their son John indicates that he was the couple's 5th child. The other John Gill & his wife Ann Bumby Gill left Hull and had a child christened in Thirsk 2 Jan 1795. It is possible that they are Mary Ann's parents but it seems more likely that she is the daughter of John Gill & Ann Thornton

CHILD 4 John GILL

CHRISTENING: St Mary, Hull Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 990838; "John s of John Gill Cordwainer by Ann his wife"

BURIAL: Holy Trinity, Hull Parish Register; FHL film 1657074; "John s of John Gill Cordwainer"

CHILD 5 John GILL

BIRTH: Salt Lake Baptisms index cards; FHL film 0183595; agrees with date given in chr record.

BIRTH-CHRISTENING: Holy Trinity, Kings Court (otherwise Christ Church), York, Parish Register Transcription with index; 1716-1812; FHL 0908279: "John son & 5th child of John Gill in Newgate, shoemaker by Ann his wife dau of William Thornton deceas'd. born Jan 2 bap 3"

CHILD 6 Elizabeth GILL

BIRTH-LDS_BAPTISM: LDS Hull Branch records; FHL film 087004: "Elizabeth Metcalf or Simpson-md, born 25 Jun 1798 at ___, Yorkshire, Engl, Bapt...at Hull" NOTE: Manti Baptisms has a proxy date 18 Sep 1888: "Elizabeth Gill born 1799, Died 16 Oct 1874, Jane Ann Metcalf Bown proxy, relation grand-niece." These two records taken together confirm her name to be Elizabeth Gill & married to Anthony Simpson. The mis-use of Metcalf in her name could occur when she would have been introduced as "Brother Metcalf's Aunt"

BIRTHPLACE: 1871 Census-Hull; FHL film 847350; pg 88; #85 Walker Street: Elizabeth Simpson, widow, 72, Formerly Fisherman's wife, born York, Yorkshire. Counted in home of David/Frances Mercer. Also in this household: Sarah Simpson Haller, single, age 13, Domestic Servant, born Hull, Yorkshire. 1851 Census also gives Elizabeth's birthplace as City of York.

PARENTS: Manti Temple records give fa as Edward Gill, but her birth date is well documented and the chr record is clear that John Gill/Ann are the parents.

PARENTS: In his will, Elizabeth Gill Simpson's husband Anthony Simpson states: "I give unto my dear wife Elizabeth Simpson (formerly Elizabeth Gill the daughter of John Gill late of the City of York deceased..." Source: Will proved at the Principal Registry 16 Apr 1866; FHL film 1850366

CHRISTENING: Holy Trinity, Kings Court (otherwise Christ Church), York, Parish Register Transcription with index, 1716-1812; FHL film 0908279: "Elisabeth dau of the late John Gill Shoemaker deceas'd by Ann his widow." It is unclear whether she was chr same dt as birth, or used chr dt as birth dt

MARRIAGE_1: Edward Brooks: St Mary, Hull Parish Reg Bishop's Trans; FHL film 0990838: Both of this parish, w/consent of those whose consent is required, Thomas Metcalf witness. Husband's burial record not found in St Mary or in Holy Trinity Registers.

MARRIAGE_2: Anthony Simpson: St. Mary, Sculcoates Parish Reg Bishops Trans; FHL Film 099440. "Anthony Simpson of this parish Mariner & Elizabeth Brooks of this parish widow by Banns. Witnesses: John _____ & Sarah Simpson." IGI has a slg dt 30 Sep 1971 SG (submitter generated)
