DOCUMENTATION
HUSBAND William NELSON
OCCUPATION: Blacksmith; source: dau Mary's burial record
POSSIBLE MARRIAGE: Source: Howden Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0991070: 1737 Nov 17 Wm Nelson Anlaby, Margtt Thornton Barmby. Anlaby is in the same area as Hessle, Kirk Ella, Welton, Willerby & Cottingham. Barmby is in the Howden parish.
1) There is no mg found for this Wm Nelson in Welton or the surrounding area.
2) Welton BT lists the burial of a Margaret Nelson, aged 80 buried 26 Jan 1780. She would have been born 1700. Looking for other Margaret Nelsons buried...
3) Judging by the date at birth of 1st child (Ann) in 1739, one would expect Wm Nelson & his wife to be born about 1710-1720. If they were born in 1700 they would have been abt 39 when Ann was born, abt 37 when they married.
4) As of yet I (Vauna Green) do not find any children christened or buried for this couple in Howden or the surrounding area. The births in Welton begin at the right time and appear to be the closest children born to a Wm Nelson.
5) Note our Wm Nelson had a daughter named Margaret, after naming a son William apparently after himself.
6) If this Margaret Thornton Nelson is the same Margaret Nelson buried in 1780, she would have been 49 at the birth of her last child in 1749. That is pushing it, but her age would explain the 5 year gap between Richard's chr in 1744 & Mary's chr in 1749.
7) There is also a burial of Dorothy Nelson widow 15 Feb 1771 in Welton. She could be Wm's widow also, but it is more likely that she was the widow of Thomas Nelson who was bur in 1753 in Welton. A Richard Nelson is also buried in Welton in 1794 so Margaret could also have been his widow. In other words, there are other possible arrangements of couples besides Wm & Margaret. Wm Nelson's burial has not been found.
Need to search probate rec, burial rec etc etc
CHILD 1 Ann NELLSON
BIRTH: Welton Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0991075. She is in a list of births -not christenings- for the year 1739, no date given.
CHILD 2 William NELSON, Jr.
CHRISTENING: Welton Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0991075. IGI has same date; source is the same film extracted. Note Sue Laing has seen the Parish Register and has a different date: 25 Oct 1740; source Parish Register 1713-1751; at the Archive Office, County Hall Beverley: "Wm son of Wm Nelson bap'd the 25th of 8ber, paid." No other Wm Nelson chr/bur in the area for this time frame found. Brenda Ball of Beverley has searched the same parish register and gives the date Oct 1741. Likely the Parish Register date is the correct that as it is the original entry--I use the Bishop's Trascript date simply because it is the date that I (Vauna Green) personally have seen.
FATHER: wife's burial record reads "Martha wife of Wm Nelson Junr"
MARRIAGE: Cottingham Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0919478: "May 1 1766 Wm Nelson of ye Parish Welton and Martha Harrison of this parish by Banns." Note Sue Laing transcribed Banns as recorded in Welton Parish Register; at East Riding Archive Office, County Hall, Beverley, England: "Banns of Marriage between William Nelson of this parish and Martha Harrison of the parish of Cottingham were published April ye 6th, 13th, & 20th by me: Geor: H. Paul, Cureate."
POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL CHILDREN: (Source IGI; extracted chr records)
John Nelson chr 22 Apr 1775 Fish Street Independent, Hull Father William Nelson Mother Martha
Martha Nelson chr 10 Feb 1778 Independent, Swanland, Yorkshire Father William Nelson, Mother Martha
Need to search these records to try to confirm or deny...Note mother Martha Harrison's family belonged to an Independent Church in Cottingham.
POSS 2ND MARRIAGE-BURIAL: from Welton BT: "William Nelson from Hull died Jan 16 1811 bur in church yard age 70 years died from old age." Here is a timeline of events after Martha Harrison Nelson's death:
Martha Nelson bur 18 Feb 1779 Welton wife of Wm Nelson Junr
Wm Nelson married Elizabeth Daubner 21 Mar 1779 St Mary, Hull (Note this marriage is only a month after Martha dies)
Mary Nelson chr 11 Apr 1779 St Mary, Hull dau of Wm Nelson Blacksmith (Note she would have been conceived months before Martha Harrison died)
Wm Nelson married Eliz Kirby 8 Dec 1781 Welton (by license, both of Welton) (Note the licence--someone who could afford it)
Elizabeth Nelson bur 10 Jun 1783 Holy Trinity Hull dau of Wm Nelson (Holy Trinity Parish Register & the BT both say Jun 1783)
Eliz Nelson chr 10 Aug 1783 Welton dr of William & Eliz Nelson (This is the date the BT gives--I would be interested to see if the Welton Parish Register gives a year- i.e. 1782 -that would make it possible for these 2 entries to be the same child...this is not the only thing about the entries of the years 1782-1783 in this record that make me wonder if he transcribed the years incorrectly when he did the BT.)
Richard Nelson chr 10 Oct 1786 Holy Trinity, Hull s of Wm Nelson whitesmith
Richard Nelson died 22 Sep 1787 bur Welton age 1 s of Wm Nelson Blacksmith Hull (Note that William Nelson's father was a Blacksmith--he could have been also. But the Wm Nelson in St Mary Parish Hull is also a Blacksmith--is this him?)
Margaret Nelson died 26 Feb 1789 bur Welton dau of Wm Nelson Blacksmith of Hull (Note the possibility that Wm Nelson's mother's name was Margaret) This could also be William Nelson Jr's sister Margaret who was christened in 1742, but only if she never married. She would be 46 in 1789.
James Nelson chr 5 Mar 1790 Holy Trinity Hull s of Willm & Eliz Nelson
(1791 - 1798 there are 4 children chr or bur to a Wm Nelson in Holy Trinity, Hull but it is even more unclear which Wm Nelson and by now at least 2 other Wm Nelsons had joined the throng: there are also Wm Nelson -Farmer & wife Elizabeth, and & Wm Nelson -Taylor & unknown wife having children chr or buried at Holy Trinity, Hull at the same time.)
Eliz Nelson widow buried 3 ___ 1805 Sculcoates
Elizabeth Nelson widow buried 17 Aug 1808 St Mary, Hull
Elizabeth Nelson wife of W Nelson of Hull died 14 Sep 1808 buried Welton 53 yrs (stated age is 9 years too young to be Elizabeth Kirby who was chr 1746 Cottingham, but ages given at time of burial are never fully reliable.)
William Nelson died 16 Jan 1811 buried Welton, from Hull, age 70 years (noting that he had not had his birthday yet, he would be exactly the age of our Wm Nelson)
NOTE that this Wm Nelson Blacksmith of Hull & wife Elizabeth do not give their children any names that our Wm Nelson & Martha Harrison have already given to their children. This point is more important than it seems, since every family in England seems to have an Anne and a John. They do, however, give them 2 names that the siblings of our Wm Nelson, Jr bear: Margaret & Richard.
PROBATE: Search negative

CHILD 4 Richard NELSON

MARRIAGE: Holy Trinity Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0990828. Note children are born to this couple in Welton after their marriage in Hull
