DOCUMENTATION

HUSBAND Christopher WASLIN

MARRIAGE_1: (Anne Bradley) South Cave Parish Christening, Marriages, Burials; County Record Office, Beverley; 1727-1778; PE145/3[9]. Seen & copied by Dianne Smith of Beverley: "Chr~is Waslin & Anne Bradly of Brooft Wed 2d." [in the word Brooft there is a squiggly over the 2nd o and the t is superscripted, both of these indicate missing letters. Some researchers read this as Brough, which is in the parish of Elloughton, 3 miles SSE from South Cave. Others read it as Broomfleet, which is in the parish of South Cave, 3 ½ miles SW of South Cave.] Copied entry in possession of Vauna Marie Green. This copied entry is NOT a photocopy or tracing--neither of those techniques being allowed--Dianne tried to reproduce the entry by hand exactly as written in the register. This entry has previously been mis-read as "Christopher Waslin to Anne Bradly wid of Brough" with mg date 2 Apr 1752 and I originally reported her to be Anne Andrew with a first husband named Robert Bradley. Sue Laing later viewed the same record and reported it to read "2 Apr 1752 Christopher Waslin & Anne Bradly of Broom~fl wed," prompting a re-evaluation of what the record actually says. Judging by the handwritten copy shown above, I (Vauna Green) am satisfied that the record is not indicating her to be a widow. NOTE: This Parish Register has not been microfilmed and so is not available for research in the U.S. The record I have personally seen is the Bishops Transcript; FHL film 0991098. The BT gives the date 24 Mar 1752 - Christopher Waslin & Anne Bradley married by banns. Note BT date is 24 Mar 1752, Parish Register date is 2 April 1752--I use the Parish Register date as it is the original entry. No children christened to this couple in the South Cave Bishop’s Transcript, and no other Waslin mentioned in the South Cave BT, but years 1698-1739 are missing.

MARRIAGE_2-BURIAL: (Hannah Mansfield) Hessle Parish Reg Bishops Trans; FHL film 0919427

OCCUPATION: Laborer per children's chr rec, Pauper per wife & his burial rec

EAST-YORKS-PETTY-SESSIONS: 8 Oct 1754 Christopher Waslin with three others bat a man with sticks and staves in an argument over two women. Christopher fined five shillings, the others fined sixpence. Five shillings in today's economy would be a thousand pounds! Source: letter from Frank Waslin in poss of Vauna Marie Green

RESEARCH NOTES:

PARENTS-ANCESTORS: While our Christopher Waslins lived in the southern part of Yorkshire's East Riding, IGI search reveals few Waslins in that area prior to about 1730. Up north in the Settrington area there are many Waslins (including an Xpoferus, the Latin equivalent of Christopher, early church records being in Latin). From a quick search, it appears that these Waslins disappeared from the Settrington area about 1710. Christopher Waslin is a very uncommon name and it is possible that these are the ancestors of our Christopher. Noting that we have yet to find a christening for this Christopher Waslin, I have wondered if the generation that migrated neglected to have their children christened. That of course is less than conjecture --it is idle conjecture.

NAME: The Waslin family appears to be a Yorkshire Family. IGI search of the name reveals a handful of WASLINS in Surrey and London, a scattered few in other England Counties, and quite a few in Yorkshire. IGI search reveals only 2 WASLINS in Prussia and NONE in ANY other countries. Because of the relatively few Waslins found in early records, I suspect that the Waslins are a single extended family--as opposed to, for example, the name Cooper which could be the name of any family that had a barrel maker as its ancestor.

WIFE Hannah MANSFIELD

CHRISTENING: IGI; source: extracted chr record

MARRIAGE-DEATH: Hessle Parish Register Bishop's Transcript; FHL film 0919427. Age at death: 74, abode Hessle. Age at death matches chr date from IGI.
