CHILD 2 William L. METCALF

BIRTH_DATE-DEATH_DATE-BURIAL_PLACE: Monument Inscription at Fayette Cemetery, seen by Vauna Marie Green 5 June 2000. This single large monument serves as a monument for James & Caroline Metcalf's four deceased children: William, Lester, Mariana/Laura E., & Mabel. Photographs & rubbing of inscription in possesion of Vauna Green. Inscription for William reads: "William L. Born Nov. 2, 1871 Died Dec. 6, 1874" and below: "children of Jas' & C.M. Metcalf." This monument was clearly erected some years after William's death, as the other 3 children all died in Jan - Feb 1890.

NOTE THERE IS A SECOND MARKER about 35 feet away from this large monument. This small second marker is of a more modern style - a simple metal plaque set in cement. "William L. Metcalf 1871 - 1883." NOTE the year of death is different than that given on the large monument. This marker is identical in style to numerous others in the Fayette Cemetery. As per phone call 8 June 2000 with Janice Bown, Fayette Town Clerk & Sexton, this and the other markers like it are the result of an Eagle Scout Project done by a Fayette teen several years ago. His goal was to memorialize the old unmarked graves in the Fayette Cemetery and he used available sources for grave locations & dates. This grave is probably the original burial site for William, and perhaps the young man got the 1883 date from the "Copy of Cemetery Records" Typescript described below.

DEATH_DATE: Copy of Cemetery Records, Fayette, Sanpete Co., Utah; Typescript; FHL book 979.256 V3ce; pub. 1934; page 17: "METCALF,William, b. 2 Nov. 1871, d. 6 Dec. 1883." Note the death date is different than that given on the large monument. THIS RECORD IS A TYPESCRIPT COPY - the author is the Gunnison Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, NOT "Sanpete County" as it would be if it were the original document. As per phone call with Janice Bown, Fayette Town Clerk & Sexton, there are no existing old Sexton Records for the Fayette Cemetery. Ward members over the years have tried to organize a variety of records and documents, including tombstone inscriptions, removal orders, etc, in order to made the Fayette Cemetery data available. And I believe that someone accidentally swapped William's death date and Lester's birth date while preparing this record. Note that both events happened on December 6. This record has William died 6 Dec 1883 and Lester born 6 Dec 1874. The tombstone itself has William died 6 Dec 1874 and Lester born 6 Dec 1883.

DEATH: Fayette Ward Membership Record 1871-1950; FHL film 0025955: December 6th 1874 Wm Metcalf died. This date agrees with the date on the large monument.

DEATH: Utah State Historical Society Web Site Burial Database; http://history.utah.org/Services/lcburials.html "Metcalf, William L. Male, Birth: 11/2/1871 Death: 12/6/1874, Grave Location: Fayette Cemetery." Note that the death date matches date on monument. As per phone call with Janice Bown, Fayette Town Clerk & Sexton, who oversaw the submission of this data, this data is the recent result of various ward members gathering available records as described above.

DEATH_DATE: MY CONCLUSION: I'm (Vauna Green) accepting the death date on the large monument. If William didn't die until 1883, he should be with the family in the 1880 census -and he's not. And if Lester were born in 1874 as opposed to 1883, he should be with the family in the 1880 census -and he's not. Also, the Fayette Ward Member record says William died 6 Dec 1874, agreeing with the tombstone. Why would the member record have reported his death 9 years before it happened? All this makes me believe that William died in 1874, and Lester was born in 1883.

CHILD 5 Mabel METCALF

BIRTH: age 2 in 1880 US Census; FHL film 1255338; Gunnison, Sanpete

BIRTH: IGI: born 8 April 1878, Gunnison, Sanpete, Utah; relative: Hannah Metcalf; source: Manti baptisms film #170384 pg 450 #16222 Note birthdate given as April 8 - this is the same day as sister Mariana's birth date.

DEATH: The Home Sentinel, Manti; Tues Feb 4, 1890; FHL film 1486737: "We regret to say that Mr. Jas. Metcalf of Gunnison has lost another child from diphtheria, Little Mabel who succumbed to the scourge on Tuesday the 28th 1890. We tender our consolation in which all join us." Note death date given is one day earlier than date given in Sexton records and on tombstone.

BIRTH_DATE-DEATH_DATE-BURIAL_PLACE: Monument Inscription at Fayette Cemetery, seen by Vauna Marie Green 5 June 2000. This single large monument serves as a monument for James & Caroline Metcalf's four deceased children: William, Lester, Mariana/Laura E., & Mabel. Photograph in possesion of Vauna Green. Inscription for Mabel reads "Mabel Born April 6, 1878. Died Jan. 29, 1890." Note birthdate is given as April 6.

DEATH_DATE-BURIAL_PLACE: Sanpete County Sexton Cemetery records, Gunnison; FHL film 889380 item 1: "James E. Metcalf -Mabel, Jan 29, 1890, Buried in GUNNISON, block 3, lot 54." Sister Mariana & brother Lester were also buried in this lot according to this record. This record is chronological, clearly done at the time. On 5 June 2000 this researcher (Vauna Green) tried to find this grave without success. The caretaker and I searched the plans for the cemetery and COULD NOT find a Lot 54 in Block 3. Note that the graves in this cemetery are not numbered sequentially - i.e. lot 53 is on one end of block 3 and lot 55 is on the other side! I walked the entire cemetery and did not find a marker for any of James & Caroline Metcalf's children, but there are many old graves that are unmarked, marked only with a small stone bearing only initials, or marked with a disintegrated stone. Perhaps the parents intented to bury the children in Gunnison, but changed their minds at the last minute. Note that Lester died three weeks after Mariana's death. I doubt that they waited 3 weeks to bury Mariana - and 3 weeks later Lester was put in the record as being buried in the same lot in Gunnison as Mariana & Mabel. This leads me to wonder if maybe one, two, or all three of them were originally buried in Gunnison and later moved to Fayette.

CHILD 6 Mariana or Laura E. METCALF

BIRTH: 1880 US Census gives month of birth for infants - has born April, 3/12 year old; FHL film 1255338. Tombstone gives birthdate as 8 April 1880.

NAME: 1880 Census has her name Mariana. Sanpete County Sexton's Record has her name Mariana. Her inscription on the monument in the Fayette Cemetery has Laura E. It is clearly the same child, as the birth date on the tombstone matches her birth date given in 1880 census, and the death date on the tombstone matches the death date given in the Sanpete County Sexton Cemetery Records.

BIRTH_DATE-DEATH_DATE-BURIAL_PLACE: Monument Inscription at Fayette Cemetery, seen by Vauna Marie Green 5 June 2000. This single large monument serves as a monument for James & Caroline Metcalf's four deceased children: William, Lester, Mariana/Laura E., & Mabel. Photograph in possesion of Vauna Green. Inscription for Mariana/Laura reads "Laura E. Born April 8, 1880. Died Jan 24, 1890."

DEATH: The Home Sentinel, Manti; Tues Jan 28, 1890; FHL film 1486737: "Diptheria is raging in Gunnison, so Dr. Olsten says, Selectman Jas Metcalf has his whole family down, one resulting fatal." This is clearly Mariana/Laura E.

DEATH-BURIAL: Sanpete County Sexton Cemetery Records, Gunnison; FHL film 889380 item 1: "James E. Metcalf, Girl -Mariana, Jan 24 1890, Buried in GUNNISON, block 3, lot 54." Sister Mabel & brother Lester were also buried in this lot according to this record. This record is chronological, clearly done at the time. On 5 June 2000 this researcher (Vauna Green) tried to find this grave without success. The caretaker and I searched the plans for the cemetery and COULD NOT find a Lot 54 in Block 3. BIRTH: 1900 census lists mother as the mother of 9 children, 5 living

BIRTH_DATE-DEATH_DATE-BURIAL_PLACE: Monument Inscription at Fayette Cemetery, seen by Vauna Marie Green 5 June 2000. This single large monument serves as a monument for James & Caroline Metcalf's four deceased children: William, Lester, Mariana/Laura E., & Mabel. Photographs & rubbing of inscription in possesion of Vauna Green. Inscription for Lester reads: "Lester Born Dec. 6, 1883 Died Feb. 8, 1890" and below: Children of Jas' & C.M. Metcalf."

BIRTH_DATE: Copy of Cemetery Records, Fayette, Sanpete Co., Utah; Typescript; FHL book 979.256 V3ce; pub. 1934; page 17: METCALF, Lester, b. 6 Dec. 1874, d. 8 Feb. 1890. Note the birth date is different than that given on the large monument.

BIRTH_DATE: Utah State Historical Society Web Site Burial Database; http://history.utah.org/Services/lcburials.html "Metcalf, Lester B. Male, Birth: 12/6/1883 Death: 2/8/1890, Grave location: Fayette Cemetery." Note that the birth date matches date on monument. As per phone call with Janice Bown, Fayette Town Clerk & Sexton, who oversaw the submission of this data, this data is the recent result of various ward members gathering available records as described above.

BIRTH_DATE: MY CONCLUSION: I'm (Vauna Green) accepting the death date on the large monument. If Lester were born in 1874 as opposed to 1883, he should be with the family in the 1880 census -and he's not. And if William didn't die until 1883, he should be with the family in the 1880 census -and he's not. Also, the Fayette Ward Member record says William died 6 Dec 1874, agreeing with the tombstone. Why would the member recordhave reported his death 9 years before it happened? All this makes me believe that William died in 1874, and Lester was born in 1883. There is another small matter: a 6 Dec 1883 birth date for Lester is only 8 months before sister Evelyn's stated birth. Oh well, I'm still going with the date on the tombstone.

DEATH: The Home Sentinel, Manti; Tues Feb 11, 1890: "We are again called upon to cronicle the death of another of Mr. James Metcalf's children, making the third, in as many weeks, all of whom died of that fell destroyer, diptheria. We realize the utter futility of offering or attempting to offer comfort or consoloation under these trying circumstances but would commend the bereaved parents and family to the kind care and keeping of Him who doeth all things well, and who is the only source of comfort and consolation." This is clearly Lester.

DEATH-BURIAL: Sanpete County Sexton Records, Gunnison; FHL film 889380; item 1: "James E. Metcalf, boy, Lester, Feb 8, 1890, Buried in GUNNISON, Block 3 lot 54." Sisters Mabel & Mariana were also buried in this lot according to this record.
