Henry Homer Bartholomew, age 69, died October 4, 1990, at his home after a courageous battle with Amyothrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Born March 13, 1921 to Henry L. and Ireta Rallison Bartholomew in Fayette, Utah. Married Betty Deakin in the Logan Temple, March 6, 1953, who died September 19, 1974. Married Ellen Aldous, April 18, 1977.
Graduated from BYU and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1949. He interned at LDS Hospital and was a resident in Ophthamology at Stanford University from 1953-1956. He began private practice in Salt Lake City in 1956 and joined the Salt Lake Clinic in 1960 where he founded the Clinic's eye department. He was a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Medical School and on the staff at LDS Hospital and Primary Children's Hospital. He was a member of many professional organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American College of Surgeons. He was an active member of the LDS Church all of his life, and served a Western States LDS mission (1941-1943). As a High Priest in the Monument Park Stake, he held various ward and stake positions. He recently completed a 2 1/2 year calling as a Medical Consultant to the Church Welfare Services and Missionary Departments. He served in the Navy in WWII and as an orthopedic surgeon in a M.A.S.H. unit in the Korean Conflict. He was an accomplished gardener and also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren since his retirement in January 1988.
Survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters: Brent (and Karen) Bartholomew, Susan (and Terry) Johnson, Diane (and Bill) McKean, and David (and Tena) Bartholomew; six stepchildren: David (and Sonny) Aldous, Mark (and Ida) Aldous, Susan Aldous, Alan (and Julie) Aldous, Stephen (and Stacy) Aldous, and James Aldous; 23 grandchildren. Also survived by two brothers: John (and Kathleen) Bartholomew, Fayette, Utah, and Ross (and Pat) Bartholomew, Centerville, Utah. Preceded in death by three brothers and a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 8, 1990, at 12 noon, at the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 South Wasatch Drive. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Sunday, 6-8 pm, and at the Stake Center Monday, one hour prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1811 East Fort Union Boulevard #100, Salt Lake City, Utah 84121.
