Edith Bartholomew Bauer, 94, passed away peacefully on July 22 surrounded by family members.
Born February 10, 1910 in Gunnison, Utah, to Alma C. Bartholomew and Elsie K. Christensen, she was the fifth of eight children. As a youngster she lived in Lyman, Wyoming, Gunnison, Ogden, and Goshen, Utah, before moving to Payson. She graduated from Payson High School in 1927 and graduated from BYU in 1930. Shortly after beginning her teaching career at Payson Junior High she met Heber Carl Bauer. They married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1934. Their two children Helen and Boyd were born in Payson. They moved to Southern California in 1940. Heber contracted polio and died in 1943. Edith returned for additional training at BYU, receiving a Master's degree in 1945, and was offered a teaching position there. She remained at BYU for her entire 30 year career.
An active member of the LDS church Edith filled numerous music and teaching positions, including service as a member of the General Board of the Sunday School. She was both a member and officer of the Association of American University Women. That organization named her Utah Woman of the Year in 1969.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Heber Carl Bauer, her parents, four brothers, her daughter, Helen Kimball, and a granddaughter, Joyce Kimball. She is survived by her son, Boyd Heber Bauer (Alice Eliason Bauer), sisters Ellamae Krantz and LaPreal Loveless, a son-in-law, Dr. David A. Kimball, nine grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held July 30, at 11:00 a.m. in the Orem Sunset Heights 6th Ward chapel, 500 S. 600 W. A viewing will be at the chapel from 9:00-10:30 a.m. on the same date. Funeral arrangements provided by SereniCare (801) 255-2801. Interment, the Payson City Cemetery.
