DEATH: Obituary; Deseret Evening News, Tuesday 8 Sept 1908:
Sunday morning last John Edward Metcalf, a familiar figure, passed away after suffering for some weeks. Mr. Metcalf was for many years well known as a hotel proprietor in Manti and previous to coming here was a resident of Gunnison and Fayette, his parents locating in the latter place as early as the "fifties."
Deceased was born in Hull, England June 23, 1839. He has a family residing in Oregon, and a number of children here to mourn his loss. Mr. Metcalf was for many years engaged in farming, stock raising and also owned some sheep. He was for some time superintendent of the Gunnison Co-op, and performed missionary labors in the Southern States many years ago. He was proprietor of what was known as the Temple hotel during the erection of the Manti temple for a number of years. He was a faithful man in religious affairs, always willing and ready to assist in every good work required of him by those in authority. He has in later years been an almost constant worker in the Manti temple and has been of much assistance to Patriarch John B. Maiben since the sudden departure of the latter's family by death. Funeral services will be held from the tabernacle Wednesday.

MANTI BOY KILLED IN TWELVE MILE.
Was Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Metcalf and Well Known in Carbon County.
Vernon Metcalf, the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Metcalf of Manti, was killed instantly last Saturday while bringing a load o lumber down Twelve-Mile Canyon, which is situated just east of Mayfield. He had been working for the past month with Silas Hofheins, hauling poles and lumber from Hinningson’s sawmill. On this trip he was accompanied by Leland Hofheins, a son. While going down a very steep hill, Leland pulled so hard that the rope on the brake lever was broken. He told Vernon to jump and then immediately leaped off the wagon. In his scramble to regain his footing he could not tell whether Vernon had jumped or had been knocked off, but when he came to a position where he could see what had happened, he was astonished to find him lying dead by the roadside with his head crushed.

DEATHPLACE: Most family records have Manti. Death certificate states Gunnison. Newspaper death notice (the only source that gives the whole story) says that it happened in Twelve-Mile Canyon, just east of Mayfield, which is in Sanpete County.
