Jack Chew, Oldest Basin Citizen, Dies at 102, Funeral Held Sunday
Funeral services for 102-year-old John Hoyle (Jack) Chew, the oldest resident
of the Uintah Basin, were conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Jensen ward chapel.
Jack Chew, as he was known to everyone, died at a convalescent home in Salt
Lake City last Wednesday, August 25, fourteen days after his 102nd birthday.
Death was attributed to age.
Mr. Chew was born August 11, 1852 in
A few months after John arrived in Nephi he was sent to live with a neighbor to
learn farming and care of stock. At 15 his mother died and John began making a
living for himself and his sister. By the time he reached 29, he was making a
living breaking and training horses and raising a few cattle. He married Mary
E. Metcalf in Fayette, Sanpete County July 9, 1881. She died December 17, 1950.
In the year 1901 John took up a homestead on

Bishop Warren Billings conducted at the services for Mr. Chew. Mrs. Margaret
Caldwell gave the opening selection with a violin solo, accompanied by Ruby
Fife.
Opening prayer was offered by Orvil Dudley. The speakers were Driver E. Smith
and Victor Wilkins. The songs included, “Nearer Home,” by Gerald and Margaret
Caldwell, accompanied by Ruby Fife, and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” by Carwin
Snow, accompanied by Marie Poulson. The closing prayer was offered by Moroni
Moon.
Burial was in the Jensen cemetery where the grave was dedicated by Percy
Stewart. Paul-bearers were five sons and a son-in-law, Ralph, Reine, Rial,
Douglas and Harry Chew and James Robinson.

Mary E. M. Chew Funeral Services Held in Jensen
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Eliza Chew who died Sunday evneing in the Uintah
county hospital in Vernal following a stroke, were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in
the Jensen ward chapel with Orvel Dudley of the Jensen bishopric in charge.
Opening prayer was offered by Lloyd Dudley; closing prayer by Moroni Moon, with
Joseph Dudley dedicating the grave. Speakers were Victor Wilkins and H. Walter
Woolley of Vernal with remarks by Orvel Dudley. Musical numbers were “I Know
That My Redeemer Lives” by Vernal Second Eard Choir with Lila Ashby
accompanist; “In the Garden,” vocal solo by Carwin Snow with La Von Wall
accompanist; “Beyond the Sunset” 2nd ward choir with Lila Ashby reading.
Pallbearers were six sons, Harry, Reine, Rial, Ralph,
In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Vera Ainge, Mrs. Rebecca Stewart, Mrs.

Mrs. Chew was born Oct. 15, 1863 at

Mrs. Viva Smith, Longview, Wash.; and Mrs. Jean Robinson, Vernal; four sisters,
Mrs. Emma Brown, Springville; Mrs. Jane Nielson, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Ina
Nielson, Thistle, Utah, and Mrs. Sylvia Caldwell, Centerfield; 27 grandchildren,
23 great grandchildren. Her children were all present at the funeral with the
exception of Mrs. Viva Smith, Mrs. Avvon Hugel and Mark Chew who were unable to
make the trip in time for the services.

Word arrived in Vernal last week that former Vernal residents, Mr. and Mrs.
Mark Chew of
Mr. and Mrs. Chew were married Nov. 30, 1907, in
For several years following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Chew made their home
on their cattle ranch in Western Colorado, later moving to San Francisco and
then to Grants Pass, Ore. Since 1947, Mr. Chew has been employed by the
Truckee-Carson Irrigation District at Derby Dam.
Mr. and Mrs. Chew lived in Vernal and Jensen for five or six years prior to

a golden anniversary theme and topped with a miniature bridal couple. They were
the recipients of many gifts and messages of congratulation.
They have two sons and a daughter living in the

Chew and Mrs. R.T. Kelly is their daughter. Another daughter, Ina Dickey died
